View Full Version : Bought a GPS
I just won an auction on ebay for a Magellan Explorist 210. Its got pretty much memory, and comes with the Topo program (thats what I really wanted). Its got the geocaching deal, which I don't know if I'll use or not but it'll be nice to have in case I get a wild hair.
I really wanted it for the shawnee and the river, and for marking spots on my families farm. Hopefully I get familiar with it before hunting season starts. Its supposed to be pretty user friendly.
Its slightly used but I saved about 50 bucks over a new one.
You'll love it, just start playing with it now. Use it going to work and stuff just to help you familiarize with it.
gretchensteele 09-16-2007, 08:03 my overly cautious family thinks I should have one, since sometimes my brain doesn't work so well when I am tired ...they are afraid I am going to get lost one of these days...I keep telling them that if I am having an episode that's enough for me to be lost in woods that I know well..It'll be enough that I'd never figure out the GPS at that time either ... I'll stick to telling my pal which woods I go in and when to expect me out, and carry my cell phone..
But I do think one would be cool and that geocaching sounds like lots of fun!
lifestudent55 09-16-2007, 09:03 At least topo stuff doesn't change too often (except for volcanoes, floods, new lakes, etc.). I use a topo program in mine on the boat since my wife likes staying out late and some coves aren't lit up at night. I would've liked having a gps on some hunts I used to go on.
Using the driving program is how I got here.

40 years ago there was a road there. Navtech still shows one there, but it hasn't been in 40 years. You'd think they'd up date their maps by now.

I got real good instructions to Chester from Fun. It's pretty much a straight shot south from Walsh.

I am ......lol........I am suppose to met gretchen again.....we are gonna find waldo this time! lol.....J/k
lifestudent55 09-17-2007, 07:59 You're more likely to find Popeye and Wimpy than Waldo in Chester. Actually Popeye is just outside town, but Wimpy is in the town park.
Popeye and wimpy is fine....Waldo is not.......lmao! Naw, Im not sure where we are going...I would want to see all that with the kiddos.....like metropolis with the superman, they luved that! lol
lifestudent55 09-17-2007, 08:25 Too bad you didn't make it to the Popeye picnic last weekend. We had a great time with Fun and his family. Your kids would've loved the petting zoo, though you'd have probably had a hard time getting them back out. My wife went in to feed the animals and came out with her T-shirt covered with hoof prints from the goats climbing up to get some feed.
Then again, you and Gretchen were out exploring and looking for Waldo then, weren't you?
Naw, we went on tues. lol.... Loe had a free fun day down here on the weekend. Plus, I really didn't wanna go without B....
I would have liked to go though.......remind me next year!
 Ahhhh!!! I go hijacked.:D
lifestudent55 09-17-2007, 08:54 Sorry stealth. Back to discussing gps's folks.

Since we are back to the GPS ...is there a relative inexpensive basic starter type model that anyone could recommend? I'm thinking that it would be really great when we are riding cross country too...The more I think about it, the more I think it would be good for me when I am in woods I don't know so well...
No biggie. I've been known to hijack my own threads.:)
Sorry stealth......it won't happen again........lmao!

I've been looking at them for a while. Garmin has a line called etrex that are pretty cheap, durable, reliable, and easy to use. Magellan also has a line similar. The one I got is a step or two above the plain jane, I paid about 150 for it, the software, charger, and case. I think the etrex's range from 90-150.

Yeah right! Maybe not in the next half hour or so.;)
lifestudent55 09-17-2007, 11:00 I've already got a pocket-pc so I got a Pharos gps adapter using the Ostia software for roads. The program I've been using for topo, lakes, etc., Outdoor Navigator isn't supported anymore, but they have a new product called Pocket Navigator.
gretchensteele 09-17-2007, 13:30 Thanks guys for the info...Reckon I'll start having a look at these...
Gary Bartlow 09-24-2007, 09:06 I boutgh a Garmin etrex Legend last Febuary. Its the next step up from the cheapest.....um I mean most inexpensive one that Garmin makes. i have wanted one for years pretty much just to have one.I thought it may come in handy marking duck hunting holes in a few places I like to hunt to ease the walk in some mornings.i have found out that it don't work very well in heavy timber with the leaves on.It worked pretty good when the trees were bare.
gretchensteele 09-24-2007, 11:12 Thanks for that heads up Gary, since I would be using in heavy timber frequently... :)
