With a disappointing duck season virtually behind me, I need something to get me out of the house or I'll go bonkers. I started fishing for crappie this past fall and ended up catching a few. I forgot how good they were to eat.
So I thought I spend some of my free time chasing them again.
Does anyone fish for them with success this time of the year or are they slow? How soon do they start picking up? I'm not looking for particular spots, just a little education on their cycles.
Thanks
I see they are catching some nice ones over at Lake of Eygpt. If you do it right you can catch more in the winter about this time than you can in the spring. Crappie stack up pretty thick around alot of docks and underneath bridges. I use a slip-bobber and jigs myself and a crappie nibble doesn't hurt your chances either.

I hear they are starting to pick up a few bigger ones at crab. I have always caught my biggest crappie at crab when the weather is at its worst. Just have to keep the eyes of the rod from freezing. When the water gets hard it gets even better.
Thanks
I'll be fishing from the bank, but there's 10-12' water near by, so maybe I'll give it a shot. Maybe wasting my time though.
Are cloudy days better than sunny days or doesn't it matter?

Last year a guy here in Waterloo was catching some monster stringers at Kincaid, I am no crappie fisherman though on tips/tactics. For info on his seson last year look up state record crappie or similar searches like that on prarie state outdoors site, the interesting thing was not the biggest one he had, but the over all size of his stringers, it was crazy, and he was limiting out rather quickly. He explained that the muskie were keeping the shad's sizes down small enough for the crappie to continue feeding on them.

Swamp I don't know if that is good or bad. I would hate to give up all my fish for a fish fry. But I guess that's a good reason to go fishing a lot :rolleyes::rolleyes:
