I'm new to the Murphysboro area and was hoping to gain some incite as to the best direction to head for dove hunting, on public land, from some of the locals.

I know this topic may be taboo for some hunters. I'm not asking you to give up Uncle Jed's secret family shooting hole (I know I have a few back home). I would just like to know where it might be likely to find their natural habitat (i.e., sunflowers, corn, pebbles, and water), on public land near Murphysboro, and have the possibility of jumping a few.

Hopefully, with the season well under way, you have had your fill and won't mind parting with a few words of wisdom.

Thank you for your help.

Respectfully,

Gary

P.S. I'm going to miss the elk hunt, but look forward to goose hunting here.

Welcome aboard. You might want to go over to Kinkade lake to the PAUL ICE boat ramp off the AVA blacktop. There is public hunting on the left side of the road leading down to the boat ramp. There is a sign in sheet where you would park. There are other fields to hunt also off the AVA blacktop, but if your new to the area they are alittle harder to find.If you pm me your # I can give you some directions on how to find them.

We decided to go investigate the several hunting areas around Kinkade Lake. After several hours of not seeing much (mostly squirrel), we opted to go scout over by Route 3 where we had previously seen some farm land and more likely habitat for dove.

We ended up finding a dozen or more doves in an area with several freshly cut corn fields, power lines, and a watering hole. It was private land, so we found the nearest house (which wasn't easy) and inquired about hunting. The land owner was very gracious and gave us permission to hunt there. We took several doves and even jumped a number of ducks (no duck stamp, yet).

In all, it was a good time. We discovered several hunting areas and are more familiar with the habitat of each and the game likely there.

I would like to thank everyone for the wonderful response.

Respectfully,

Gary

P.S. Might have to go check out Crab Orchard Lake next time.

GNU you will find many farmers will allow a person to go if you only ask. PS a tube of deer sausage, bottle of wine or case of beer can go a long way when you meet the farmer at the edge of the feild too.
