View Full Version : ATV trails
Just wondering where everyone goes for public ground ATV trail riding and what everyone rides? I know of Coulterville and hope to make it down there with CCW in the spring.
I bought a Suzuki King Quad 700 4x4 this year and want to do some trail riding.
Is it possible to have an ATV/dirt bike/recreational vehicle forum created?
By the way if anyone is thinking about buying a new ATV, this place has excellent reviews of just about everything.

Also one between Marion & Harrisburg off of 13, I dont know the name of it but it's only open on weekends.
fireduck 01-01-2011, 21:15 I used to ride at St. Joes state park. Some call it Flat River. I think itas in St francios county MO. Down 55 to 67.
You can ride trails for days and never hit the same one and there are huge sand flats that are fun to ride.
Thanks fireduck, looks like St. Joe's is about 2 hours from me and sounds like a heck of a place to take the four wheeler. I'll have to keep that one on the list.
ilplowboy 01-01-2011, 23:18 I think the park that Flat was refering to by Marion is Lake of Egypt Offroad Recreation Area or you may hear of some poeple calling it LEOR. I go down there several times a year with friends. Good mix of trails for all levels of riders. Good times are had by all!!! Also heard that Flat River (St. Joes) is an exent place to ride....I think we are going to try it this year.
Finger lake SP North of Cloumbia, MO is a cool place and had good fishin!
gretchensteele 01-02-2011, 06:05 St Joes is outstanding.. my kiddos go there frequently.. and when you are over here at Coulterville, keep your eyes open for me and kid wandering around in those woods LOL
One section of the trails are very nearly on my little buddy Tater's back steps.. oh and the big wolf looking dog you'll probably encounter over here on the trails.. that's Nanook.. she's a good gal and won't bother you :)
SWAMPMAN 01-02-2011, 08:16 St Joe is great! That was my play ground in the 70's & 80's (dating myself). They shut down the huge area of the sand hills years ago but it's so big you'll never miss it.
Yes it was called Flatriver back then after the town. The town is now called Park Hills.
And the hits keep coming. Better make a quick list:
Finger Lakes State Park - Columbia, MO (http://mostateparks.com/fingerlakes/trails.htm)
St. Joe State Park - Park Hills, MO (http://mostateparks.com/stjoe.htm)
http://www.williamshillpass.com/ outsite Harrisburg, IL (http://www.williamshillpass.com/)
Little Egypt Off Road: Marion, IL (http://www.leormc.org/)
Coulterville, IL (http://www.coulterville.org/parks.php)
i use to ride LEOR St.Joes and Coyote trails..My personal favorite was LEOR because of the variety of trails...also the MX track they had was a blast..St.Joes is pretty tricky on 2 wheels because of the sand and the trails use to be full of big chunk rock..Coyote is nice because its just so darn close..Me and my brother use to go there almost every weekend
My neighbor told me tonight that the best place by far is Turkey Bay (http://www.landbetweenthelakes.com/turkey-bay-ohv.html) in Kentucky.
Hopefully he'll get a new four wheeler and we can head there this year.
If a group of us from Clinton County went somewhere to ride would anyone be interested? We'll probably wait for it to warm up a bit.
Couple things about the MO trails last I heard.
You had to have a permit sticker, and insurance.
Not sure if that still applies or not. Been a LOOONG time since I been over there. It was long before it all went to the Park Hills consolidation.
Heard several people talk about going down to Land Between the Lakes to ride. Only heard that you have to have a flag on your atv there... never been there though.
Chuck_050382 01-05-2011, 10:20 I rode my 6x6 aatv at http://bricksoffroadpark.com/ once when they just openned. Looks like they have alot more trails now than they did then.
Most places I've looked at require a pass and sometimes a flag. They sell the passes and usually the flags onsite.
I've got insurance on it so that's not a problem.
Thanks for the tip Chuck.
Chuck_050382 01-05-2011, 14:11 I rode at turkey bay with a group of friends on 4 wheelers, and it was neat, but in the 6x6 it was rough, ended the day with 3 flat tires.
LEOR is a lot of fun.
My favorite place to ride closed a few yeas ago, that was paddy's bluff in KY.
16ptbuckUSApatriot 06-17-2011, 16:24 I realize this is a few months old, hope it's fine. I was wondering how crowded these trails get? Such as LEOR, Williams Hill Pass and Coyote ATV in Coulterville. We've always just messed around on family and friends' property but trail riding sounds fun. Wish I was closer to St Joes. All I'm looking for is trails for a nice ride, never been into mudding or any other crazy riding much to old for it now.
