gretchensteele 09-12-2007, 22:24 I'll have to fiddle with some of mine and make one just for you Smoke..kinda a trippy looking one ya think? We'll call it art ....since art is subjective and highly personal ..we all like different styles...
Smokey Mc Pot 09-12-2007, 22:30 haha sweet man far out dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lifestudent55 09-13-2007, 10:52 I wondered how long it would take for someone to point that out to Smoke.

lifestudent55 09-17-2007, 11:01 Y'know, I really don't think I'd be eatin' that 'shroom. It'd probably have me seein' stuff that wasn't there.
gretchensteele 09-17-2007, 13:28 Hey life..they chicken of the woods (big orange ones) are really good..and boletes are too...but be careful with eating boletes..not all are edible and it's hard to distinguish them sometimes.
Do you think there is more there now....
gretchensteele 09-17-2007, 13:35 Have you guys had any rain since then? There were a couple of teeny ones starting next to that big Chicken of the woods that might have gone ahead and filled out by now...
oh yea, naw no rain for us...I don't think anyway but does the moisture and such have anything to do with it?
It does stay cool and moist there where we found em....
Thats a Hen of the woods!? hmmmm or is a "ckicken" a different one? looks nothing like what we get....Hen of the woods anyway, grey and white.....maybe just the area?
Chicken of the woods is what the orange one was........
yea I realized that I was looking at the bottom one after I posted that...LOL, Dooooh! been so long since I have seen any type of fungi this year almost forgot them.....Kinda like the rain.
G and I found some more yest.....not chicken of the woods though...Huntrz posted some too....I bet there gonna start coming up now, but I dont know em all....Gretchen is like the mushroom queen! You can ask her....lol
This is what I was referring to, Hen-o-Woods, kinda like a big solid bunch (cauliflower type) are good too. We have found these as big as 50# and when we clean them they are like ummmm, petals if that makes sense?

gretchensteele 09-19-2007, 13:53 Chicken of the woods are in the same family as hen of the woods..they are pretty similar in taste, size etc..except that they are bright orange with cream colored edges when they a really new and fresh and then they either start to bleach out as the age or the cream willl get yellow....very easy to spot and just as good as hen o the woods! Some folks call em sulphurs..but they really aren't sulphers..sulphers are not edible..some folks also call them chicken polys because they are a polyfore....
well thanks Gretchen I did not know this, a new rinkle in the brain, Have seen them just never knew that there was a chicken and a hen.... Do they keep as well as the hens? we have had real good luck freezing them into blocks of ice and then thaw out the chunk over night and they are still very good either on grill or just pan fry.
gretchensteele 09-19-2007, 16:07 I can't say that I've had very good luck preserving them in any fashion..but I may too picky...the best I found was to cook and then freeze..but lots of folks are happy with freezing them just as you described. And yes, they really do taste like chicken LOL ....I usually chunk them up and use them in place of chicken in a recipe... oh and they will grow up in the trees as well and on the sides...so when you are shroom hunting in the fall..look up as well as down..the hedgehogs will gow up as well .....
A couple we found yest.....

I think those are just like the turkey tails but I could be wrong.....Where is gretchen??? prolly in the darn forrest lookin for more now......lol.....
gretchensteele 09-19-2007, 18:09 no..out supervising the kid on the mower..LOL he's a little new to equipment..always makes me nervous their first day or so...
Those look like turkey tails to me..too tough and leathery to eat..but can make for some really pretty pics! Lots of the shelf like polyfores look an awful lot alike..so don't hold me to the turkey tails ..I have a bad habit of lumping them all together...
