Does anyone know if Randolph Co State Rec Area would be a good public place to rabbit hunt. Growing up we had a honey hole for rabbits, but that has since changed, plus I'd rather not drive 2 hours for a couple of rabbits. The in-laws farm doesnt have many either. I enjoy hunting them, just have to find a place to go.

Do you hunt with beagles?

I have a beagle that I just got to hunt and trial with. 2 year old male, great nose.

I think hunting rabbit over beagles is as fun as it gets. Grew up on it.

I don't know of too many public areas for rabbit hunting. A lot of people gave up on them around us when they were scarce, and haven't returned.

Plenty of rabbits around. You just need to scout for them like any other game species. I have been working my dog across plenty of ground in preparation for the season and have a good idea of where I can go and shoot some rabbits. Get a training permit and let the dogs work.

I think the population is way up over the past 2 years. I have a fairly long commute through the country and I have been seeing tons of them.

I literally tripped over one as I was heading out of my pals garage last night - she's just about infested with 'em... there are plenty over here.. Our fence row is home to a good many :) Makes it easy to take the little fellas rabbit hunting..not a long walk and not too far when it's cold :)

Thats why ya need acouple of good beagle. If there are any out there they will get them up and keep them moving for you. They always circle right back to where you got them up. There's aways a few out there you just don't see them. I did a lot of hunting over the years, but some of the best memories are from when I was a kid and hunting rabbits with my dad and a couple of beagles.

Tell that to some of the rabbits I have jumped the past couple of weeks just running dogs.

I talked my dad into getting back into beagles a few years back. We had a good ol' female that passed away, and we drove down to south on his birthday last December and bought a started male and a started female. They decided to start their own family, and we had 7 pups in April.

There are rabbits everywhere now it seems like.

I know I will be out Friday morning letting my hounds run loose. I am hunting public ground early and saving the private ground until later in the season.

We have 3 females and 1 male beagle that we hunt with. It is a blast taking the kids. We hunt a 40 acre pc of groung thats really thick and before we got dogs we rarely seen rabbits. Now we see lots of them.

It's been many years since I hunted rabbits over beagles. Used to have a beagle till she was pupnapped (back in '75) and every dog from that litter was running rabbits at an early age without any training.

So who's up for a SILO rabbit hunt or just a day of letting the dogs run rabbits?

If the dogs stay on them and don't loose them, the biggest majority will circle back. I hunted over beagle for a lot of years. If I still lived in the country and not in the city limit, I would have a pair today. I grew up hunting and field trialing them.

All this talk has given me the taste for fried rabbit and milk gravy.

Back in my much younger days I got of a second shot with a break action single shot because my uncle's dog brought the rabbit back around for me. The second shot I was more relaxed and didn't miss.

Yeah, some fried rabbit with milk gravy is starting to sound real good.

We never did hunt with dogs. We were the dogs for each other (I have scars to prove it I think) We just walked up and down the field rows one on each side and kicked and stomped where it looked like a rabbit could hide. We did well enough to keep our interest in going and loved it.

I'm up for a SILO rabbit hunt. I don't have dogs, nor have I ever been rabbit hunting, but I'd love to go. I don't even need to shoot anything, I'd just enjoy watching the dogs work em, and seeing somebody else handy with a shotgun.

Went coon hunting with coonhunter one time, just as an observer, that was a blast, and fun to watch the dogs work.

Boom Boom...you sound just like me. Gramps would say , "Boy get in there and shake up that brushpile." I'd do it and now wonder how nice it would have been to have the outerwear we have to day. Did I say I really despise briars at time..LOL

Me too Dave... in PA you can't hunt until your 12... up until then I'd do anything just to be able to go along... and being the dog was a good way for the older guys to take a dumb kid... LOL

I reckon a lot of us have had to kick up the rabbits without a dog a few times. Hunting with beagles works a lot better. Besides, I'm not that limber anymore. :D

Let's shoot for december sometime. Pyramid SP sound good? Hopefully by then we will have some rain and the scenting will be a lot better, its been tough running so far this year even with the ease of jumping rabbits.

I can't wait to start my pup either, but its going to have to wait for a while and I hope to have her as a trial dog for next year's derbies. Then we will go from there whether she is a hunter or a trialer.
