I trimmed up and marinated a 1 lb sirloin roast from last years deer for jerky. Got the smoker warmed up... took the meat out, spread it on 2 racks, up on the porch table, went in for something, maybe a minute... came back out, and I have 4 pieces of meat left. Cute lil Mia pretty much cleaned me out... Labs... lost an Easter ham to one once... another at a birthday cake. Nes has done her share of pilfering too... Will I ever learn??? LOL:cool:

There's something in the air - Willie is horrific this am - just horrific.. he is currently having a time out..after dragging every shoe, boot, rug and library book he could find to the deck.. he's been on an absolute roll.. ( and yes the little snot can already run faster than me!)
Thankfully he hasn't displayed any food snarfing behavior ....YET! LOL

It is not just Lab's, I had a steak on the grill and came back out to find the neighbors German Shepherd finishing it off. She tried to act innocent but the rack burn marks on her chin gave her away. :D

Don't have a lab at the moment, but had them since I was a kid. One time my mom had made a huge peach cobbler before church, set it out on the oven top to let cool and when we got home there was nothing left but the peaches, Our lab, Bruno, ate all the top and left us the fruit. It was truely funny, but mom was PO'd.

LOL!! These stories are hilarious!

That's a real bummer, Bob! At least she shared a little with you! ;)

That's why you never leave people food anywhere that a lab, or any other dog, can get to. Bummer about your venison Bob.

They are very opportunistic, LOL. Murphey's nose is always close to the counter. Although I guess I should be happy, instead of stealing food they have caught 2 pigeons this past week. And, Gretchen, how does your time out system work?

Having a fish fry a few years ago let my big knucklehead boxer run with my dads lab, they took off exploring the neighborhood, 20 mins later heard someone say oh my god where did they get those. They both had 20 dollar t-bones in their mouths, piping hot, we left them alone so they would quickly destroy the evidence. Never did figure out who they robbed.

Willie's time out is actually part of his service dog training - but it keeps him quiet. He has to be trained to sit and/or lie down right next to me and to stay there and be quiet until I release him - When we started the first few days, I literally had to almost sit/lay on him to get him to grasp it - He's up to sitting/lying quiet for 15- 20 minutes at a stretch ; not bad I figure for a 9 week old pup :) We have a whole routine that we do twice or three times a day with several different aspects to it. He' s also being socialized to public places and crowds right now - he's been to the library, the thrift store, the tavern, the farmers market among other places - so far so good; he sits down and lasts about 10 minutes then his overwhelming curiosity kicks in and we are toast. Today at the farmers market I knew he would have lots of distractions so we took a little chew toy to keep him occupied and that helped a good bit. And the real trick - service dogs have to potty on command... that is not as easy as it sounds! I'm sure the neighbors think I'm lunatic out there saying - Willie pee ! Willie Poop! Good Willie!

We had an english pointer that got in the shed and nosed open the deep freeze! When we got home there was a big fat dog lying in a pile of shredded freezer paper. he got 2 sticks of deer sausage and a pound of burger.lol

My brother had a lab that could snatch a loaf of bread off the counter and eat all but the wrapper in minutes. The best was one day he was acting very strange and could hardly stand. We rushed him the the vet. After an initial exam the vet accused us of getting the dog drunk. After clearing his stomach we realized he had eaten a huge bag of pizza dough (intended for my hogs) the night before. The dough had fermented and the poor dog was blasted.

Best dog that ever owned me was a lab. He was partial to beer though. And he had learned to drink out of a glass w/o spilling a drop. If my buddy would set his glass down, he'd come back to an empty cup. He did it twice before we realized what was happening. Ol' sparkie was a happy dog that night.

Yep, poor Sparkie was a lush and I rarely had beer around.
I have so many good stories about that old dog. He sure was special and I got tears in my eyes right now just remembering some of his antics.

Gretchen, that sounds like a challenge. I think we tried the same thing with Murphey when he was a pup, but he doesn't last long staying calm.......and I believe the worst incident we had with them taking food was Gracie eating the bag of thawing chicken breast. Called the vet and they said to give her some peroxide to make her throw it up, so I did and let her out for 30 min and watched her out the window, NOTHING. Nothing that is until I let her back in the house. It took her 30 seconds to vomit right onto the chicken floor, I about lost it myself. I made the mother-in-law clean that one up. It was her chicken.

OH it's a challenge all right LOL but Will is handling it fairly well...by no means does he go on commandall or even most of the time yet - but he has at least figured out to go the door when he has to potty and will go when I tell him about half the time.. it's all about routine.. and if we get out of whack on the routine.. things don't go so well.. jeez..might as well have a toddler in the house again...
The hardest thing with Will is is he's so enthralled with Buddy - he's afraid he'll miss something Buddy is doing if he goes out to potty LOL Thankfully Buddy gets this and when I say Outside Will - bUddy troops along now to make sure Will goes out. Gotta love Buddy - he's teaching will lots of things for me..

This is a picture of Sparkie and "his" girls about the time this story happened...
http://www.siloutdoors.com/imagehosting/4334ccdee1c259f5.jpg

The girls wanted to go swimming at the lake. So I took them along with Sparkie. One of the few Labs that did not like water. I put them in a buddy's canoe and paddled us over to the old swim beach at the former 4-H camp.
I made the girls wear life vests because I was not as sure of their ability as they were. They soon were well out in the water having a blast as I watched and Sparkie paced back and forth at the waters edge.
It wasn't long before the splashing and high pitched yells only little girls can make. Now Sparkie was whining and then he jumped into the water and swam toward the girls. I had no idea what he was up to until Katelyn began yelling in protest and I can see Sparkie holding onto her vest and heading back to me (shore actually). When He got to where she could stand up, he dropped her and headed back for Karen. She did her best to fight him off but he was too fast for her and soon she was being dragged to shore also.
Katelyn had already figured out that she had a game going and was headed back out in the lake.
If I had only had a video camera that day. He thought his girls were in trouble and was willing to go in after them even though he had NEVER swam before.
That is why old Sparkie earned a place in my heart that no animal and darned few humans will ever get to.
