It's a favorite when I'm out in St. Louis and might have had more than a few beers after say a cards game, or a late night at my favorite blues haunt BB's Jazz and Blues. IF you haven't had one....you should, and the best place in my opinion is Eat Rite, and it's close to the stadium. Don't be afraid of having to get buzzed in, the place is harmless....and late at night all kinds are in there, from guys who'd been out all night, to the guy who probably only has enough money to his name for one burger, to the Washington Avenue girls dressed to the nines after spending the night clubbing.

Pile these on top of each other.

Two sausage patties (beef patties also an option)
Hashbrowns (shredded is the way to go and crisps better)
Two eggs any way ya like (I like em over easy and runny)
Cover in chili.
Optional: top with onions & cheese

and on the side two pieces of toast.

Make one at home, but best served in the ambiance of the EAT RITE ...remember EAT RITE or don't eat at all!!!

I had them at O T Hodge back when they were near downtown StL. They'll definitely fill you up, and they are delicious.

EAT RITE!!!!!!!? When I was younger I used to work downtown driving a horse drawn carriage. After work we would always be hungry and have eaten there more than a few times. You used to be able to get 6 cheeseburgers for 5 bucks (white Castle sized). Well, we stopped going there after one nights observations. First of all they had a C rating by the health department but still had the A sticker (Three years outdated) on the window. Second, we come to realize that the owner or Lady that ran the place (Classic ol gal with a big beehive hair doo and long fingernails) had been hiring homeless guys to clean up around the joint and wash dishes and such (which I think is great). But one night we witnessed the same guy who was always there cleaning up washing down the counters with this dirty old rag and then wipe the grease off the floor in front of the griddle with it. After that he went to drying the clean dishes with the same rag!!! very shocking, needless to say I haven't been back. The Eat Rite down off of Lindbergh in South County is much nicer and serves the same food.

ROFL EAT RITE - the home of the PT, Roxy's, et all Breakfast crew :) (meaning the dancers) Eat Rite is landmark and a second home to many of us..don't be scared.. none of us have ever gotten ill from Eat Rite..
Truthfully if folks had a clue what went on in the back of even some the fanciest, best rated places you'd crap.

Another great place to eat is City Diner...but they are only open 24 hours on Friday and Saturday nights... 7A-11P Mon thru Thursday

I think you are referring to Betty....here's a link to a pic

No body takes an order like Betty. SLINGER with her raspy older woman voice. Love that lady. I've worked in a restaurant and agree with Gretchen, you don't want to know what goes on back there. At the EAT RITE it all goes on in front of you...instead of behind closed doors. Never gotten sick from the EAT RITE!!!

I enjoy the City Diner also...been there numerous times.

those are big in Central IL, only take away the chili and add gravy and call it a Haystack

or add melted cheddar cheese to than and call it a Horseshoe. Just about everywhere had them.

Mary Ann's in Champaign makes a mean Haystack.
