OMG! They are up!!! I can't wait for rain....please rain so the fall shrooms will start popping! That's a variety of puff ball...it should be solid and white when you cut it in half...
if it's all darkened or especially if it's already starting to get pwodery or show spores it's past the edible point...as always use extreme caution eating one that's been id'd by a picture...

I have several patches of these..now if it would just rain...I bet they'll be full!

The only fall mushrooms we ever picked my Grandpa called "button" mushrooms. I remember them growning on the North side of trees right at the base usually around leaves.

Those might have been what I call honey mushrooms...brown and round and big clumps? Fall is really good for puffballs, hen of the woods, elephant ears, hedgehog, and several others...the hedgehogs are better than morels!

Same here. I'd rather have a plate of sauteed morels than a fine steak. The morels cost more too.

I had morels in my deer stroganoff last night. HEHE YUMMY

Would I lead you astray?? I didn't believe it either but...once you try one you will be surprised..they are a solid white shroom, peel off the spiny outer cover and then slice the solid white interior thin, saute in butter with just a teeny scatter of herbs...seriously!
I learned about them from a well respected shroomer...(Smoky remember Mr. Lehr?) they are like hen o the woods in that once you find them, they will usually return to that same tree/stump/log every year. It's not unusul to see them up relatively high on a tree..This is a lousy picture..it was getting dark and was down in creek bottom, but this gives you a rough idea what they look like...the same evening I found these, I found a mess of aborted entelomas too...last fall was very a good year for fall shrooms!s

no the bear paws look lots different...oh good heavens..better start looking on my external drives for last years fall shrooms! I have a couple of shots of what we called bear paws..but I never know about local names. ya know? What I call a beefsteak and what others call beefsteak are often different...that kind of thing...
