Got hooked on a few River Monster episodes this evening. One was on snakeheads (and their possible coming invasion). Below is a link to an interesting article about the trials and tribulations Arkansas is going through to try to stop their advance, should anyone be interested. I hope they succeed.

I saw that episode too. This is a good article.

These are supposed to be good eating, and very nutritious. Still, I could see how they could devastate native fish populations.

I've been wanting to stick one since I seen pics of a guy bowfishing for them on bowfishing country. To me they looked like a wicked grinnel. And boy do I like shooting grinnel.

The differences are that these bite back and they're very edible.

but read on...

The last time we were there, we had just put the boat on the trailor and were securing everything for the trip home. There were a couple of guys talking over by a truck and as we were about done, one of them heads our way. He asks if we know what a snakehead is and we nod. He says the other fellow has just caught two and they're in the back of his truck. He's on his way to the bait shop to alert the authorities. He wails that the fishing's no good and they are the reason. They've eaten all the fish. (even though we just saw schools of small silver carp by the thousands)
It still puts a knot in your gut to think that there might be yet another invasive species here to screw up the native fish even more. At the same time not believeing it was actually snakeheads because there would have been other reports of them downstream. When we got to the truck and he pulled them up and...**Whew!** big sigh of relief! They are just Bowfin/Grinnel/Dogfish. After all three of us told him several times, They're just grinnel and that they're native. He says, Oh yeah she cooks them up all the time (pointing a thumb back at a lady still fishing). Then he turns and yells "It's OK they're GRINNERS!" :D

But to answer your question Glenn, there is a snakehead tournament out east. Call the Chief. I think it's time for a roadtrip!

We're waiting for conservation but since last night we have been investigating this fish the kids caught in the Spoon River. This thing can nearly run on land & has the features of the snakehead. Most have said it's very unlikely, but it's possible. From what I have read on them this could be a devastating issue to our small river area & was caught in the spawning area at the Bernadotte bridge. If any1 is familiar with this fish & knows if the other 2 fish it's often confused with can move on land quickly using its fins & a snake like slither that would be helpful to us. I posted a picture on & video on my face book & it seems nobody local is familiar with it. Just very curious & I wonder if conservation will give us the facts on the fish or just take it & never let us know in fear of setting a panic in our area about there being possible snake heads in our river? Very unfamiliar with this sort of issue but thus far it meets all the criteria I have researched about them. We also noticed a blue spot on its tongue that does not fit the normal description but that is the only thing that's been different from the others.
