Just to let all you deer hunters know about an issue that surprised me today. I went in a local business today and saw those mineral blocks for deer. I thought about getting a few to keep deer in the area, but I thought I would ask a local conservation officer about the legalities of placing blocks in the timber. For your information it is illegal to place those block in any hunting area, even if you remove the block prior to season. The law went into effect in 2001 because of the chronic wasting disease. The officer said they can take soil samples of an area suspected of having the blocks and the soil will reveal its presence, and you could face some consequences. Just wanted to let you know about the law. I am going to talk to the owner of the business tomorrow to let him know about the law, I believe they are under the impression that the blocks are legal.

Next they will be numbering how many you can purchase...Some of the meth labs are starting to use them in part of the process...

I reckon they are legal if I put them in my back area to use to lure them in for photos though....maybe you could use that...

Gretchen they are illegal for any purpose other than cattle. I see them at Rural King all the time and it just baffles me because they are advertising them for deer yet they are illegal.

Yep, totally illegal and i can guarantee that the CO's know about most of these salt lick, baited areas. Not worth the hassle or benefit in my book. I consider these type of attractants as the lazy mans way of hunting. What pleasure does one get from hunting an animal that has been fed. Not this Hunter> Sorry about the rant

Gotta ask...:o

Do you hunt near corn, beans, or acorns, persimmons, alfalfa, milo, wheat???

I really don't think the blocks help anyone shoot deer, but rather make someone money...

They were outlawed for fear of CWD.

BTW, I don't use em either...:p

What about scents???? Calls???

(Stir the pot.... stir the pot... LOL)

isp, As they said it's not illegal to sell them. How's that for lawyer logic.

I went down the same road in '02 right after they passed the ban. The CPO told me, "Well we don't know what they're gonna use them for..."
PLEASE don't ever try to use an arguement that lame.
They were in the sporting goods section, clearly marked as deer "bait". They cost at least twice as much as mineral blocks you'd use for cattle which were across the store in the "feed" section.
They even had deer cocaine. Better get some for my cows.

Bob, scouting for acorn, persimmon, and mast trees that produce year after year or scouting out a corn field that is attracting the deer out of the thousands of acres of corn that is available is what i consider hunting. Putting out feeders, blocks, salt, attractants(not scents), and even food plots is baiting in my book and for me...I get no satisfaction. To each his own though.
