I know this is going to probably be a boneheaded question but here goes.

Within the next month or two, I am going to be coming into posession of 2 5 year old black labs.

Any opinion on how hard it would be to get through dog obedience with them?

They have been socalized with other animals (but never hunted).

Any suggestions or comments?

i have found that labs love to learn new things, as long as you make it fun for them. But with training any dog, the key is patience.

Thanks for the input.

I really did not want to take these two but oh well....

They were a package deal on a house my wife and I are buying from our old boss. Her son and wife moved away and left them and now she is wanting to move into a small apartment and they needed a home.

I was going to find them a new home but my oldest step-son wants them, and the current owner is afraid if they go to someone they will see they are not hunters and shoot them.

So I guess I got two new additions to the home.

Lets see that will make..

My first question for you would be: What are your expectations of these dogs? Are you just wanting to do obedience training or are you interested in training them to hunt? Training a dog is very tough let alone the fact that there are 2 that are 5 years old.

I adopted an older dog. So far it has been very tough but we are making headway. He is obedient and retrieves ducks for me. Hes not an award winning dog (he never will be) but he gets the job done.

My suggestions for you regardless of what you do would be to get an e-collar. These collars are direct and immediate. Just be careful to use them appropriately and never out of anger.

If you live anywhere near Maryville, IL I would recommend taking them to Cindy's Critter Camp for training. John is the trainer there and does basic obedience up to field training.

No hunting, just obidence. Hunting would be a possibility if i hunted and these were pups.

I just want to have better control of them IF I decide not to find them a good home.
