Kaskaskia trail receives national recreation status News-Democrat

The Kaskaskia River Confluence Trail was designated as a national recreation trail by the U.S. Department of the Interior, announced U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello, D-Belleville. The Kaskaskia River Confluence Trail is the only public river access site on the banks of the Mississippi River for 100 miles in the state of Illinois. The trail covers a high-quality bottomland forested area and is used for walking, bicycling, jogging, and educational and interpretative programs on river history, navigation and shipping. “This designation will help sustain the condition of the Kaskaskia River Confluence Trail,” Costello said. “Preserving green space enhances recreational activities and is an important part of maintaining the natural beauty of our region.”
