View Full Version : canon or nikon?
I looked at the
canon rebel dslr camera 8.0 for $700
nikon d40 6.0 for $600
I think I liked the nikon better and it takes the regular sd cards instead of the big one so I can just pop it in the laptop but I don't know....what do you all suggest........I really don't want one yet, but my husband keeps asking me about them and wanting me to check into it more.......I wanna learn more about mine first........I think my camera is nice, I am the one that needs help! lol:eek:
what about just 6 mega pixels? Is that ok? You all know what I shoot....and I want something better for the wildlife eventually but it don't have to be top of the line...
Oh and is there any other good starting dslr cameras?
NIKON! I think megapixels are overrated! if I had to choose between the two I WOULD TAKE THE nIKON HANDS DOWN. BUT WHAT DO I know. my old olympus was only a 4 mp and it took way beeter pics than my 5 mp panasonic, WAY BETTER! I just think theres more to it than the the MP. MP's are marketing hype, yes more is better, but when is enuf, enuf?, the way the cam processes the info is more important. you can enlarge a 5 or 6 mp photo into an 8x10 or even an 11x14, and not see the difference with the nAKED eye, so why do you really need an 8 or 10 mp, yes to be able to crop and print,.
I used to be a graphic artist for a billboard company that printed the billboards on vinyls for the large bilboards you see on the interstates. guess what resolution we used on those vinyls? 9 dpi! 9! 9 dots per inch. not 300! not even 72, 9! think about that when you look at one next time. I shoot all my photos at 5 mp on fine, but I resize them before I post them on here to about 90 kb files.,
(I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing)(I'm an idiot for swearing),? did I type all that text,, somebody stop me....!
gretchensteele 08-18-2007, 21:51 oh no a Nikon vs Canon debate!!!! Really Bam Bam eaither is good...I use Canon but..I have always used canon and when I swapped to digtal I didn't want to reinvest in a boat load of lenses...the Nikon d40X is a better buy than the D40...
http://www.steves-digicams.com/
this site has pretyy unbiased reviews...remember once you go with a dslr..then it's adding lenses and more lenses and extra flash units and lions and tigers and bears OH my...
a decent wildlife lens will run you at least 100 used and a really good one..in the thousands...
I know some who are also really pleased with the "super zooms like the canon powershots and the FZ line from panasonic..I've stuff shot with both that would make you swear they came from DSLR...that might be a more logical step up...and then move to a dslr...
when I come down in September...(pick a day!) you can use my canon Rebel XT...they can be had for a song right now...8MP and you can see how it feels in you hands and if the buttons and dials feel good to you.
gretchensteele 08-18-2007, 21:53 oh and technically..huntrz id right..unless you are selling to print markets or blowing stuff up really big..pixels are over rated....
right now I'm lusting after either a canon 5d or the new fugi pro g5...but I need to win the lottery for that I need the bigger number of pixels cause the stock agencies won't take anything under 3000 and wedding portraits folks tend to want at 11 x 14 or 16 x 20....
I'm in love w/ my Lumix... and now they have the DC_10.... I w. huntrz about MP though anything over 6 is overkill unless your printin anything bigger than a poster. They use SD cards. I have up to 16.5x optical. Digital zoom means nothing anyway. I feel my $$$ was well spent.

Thanks for all the great tips......I know your not just buying the camera when you buy one your buying the whole line......Who's line is better?
Another ?
On the dslr cameras do you always have the screen to compose the picture or is it just for review? I looked at it but it wasn't charged of course....so I couldn't see how it really worked.......I did take a pic with the canon and it turned out awesome.......but I don't like the fact that it don't have sd cards......:(
I think the price on the Nikon is a pretty good price considering what your getting and it really wasn't that heavy. That makes a difference to me because I would be taking it to b-day parties, vacations, and school and such where I would prolly have three kids hanging off of me too!:D
I really do like my Kodak z760 and it has a shake reduction on it which is really good for me. I also can start it up and snap a shot and it turns out pretty good compared to alot of other peoples cameras. Some of them are so slow it takes forever that you miss the shot. EPS> with little kids......lol..

Here is a link to the cam I have now....I bought everything that goes with the camera besides the two lens. There is a wide angle lens or a telephoto lens. Do you think the telephoto lens would help at all? It is 60 for it and 20 for the attachment and prolly 10 to ship.....so your looking at like another 100 bucks.?? The lens is 37mm
??????????????
lifestudent55 08-19-2007, 14:09 When you start talking Canon and Nikon you're going to get a lot of personal preferences, but the most important thing is to look at which features you want, and of course the price. They're both high quality.
gretchensteele 08-19-2007, 14:43 I think canon and Nikon both make good products...here's a couple of things that you might not like about the canon....it's a freaking dust magnet..if you change lenses much you are going to end up with dust spots on the sensor...which will show up in your shots...I clean my own sensors..but it's not for the faint of heart....the lcd panel on the XT is small and can be a bear to read at times, (the XTi's is much better!) there is no LCD view (only after the fact.) .you view and compose everything through the view finder, and you have to remember when composing it's not standard size so when you compose a shot that looks perfect..if you don't leave a little wiggle room when you crop it to print at 4 x6 or any standard size you'll end up with a wrecked composition..I drag mine and the long lenses around in a fashion that would make most folks cringe...but I am accustomed to them....they don't fit in a pocket, purse, and aren't handy like that. The cameras don't have shake reduction..you can get image stabilzed lenses but they are pricey....would I trade mine..no...I'm a trued and true canon person...they seem like absolutely the most rugged things on earth and I have always had good luck with them...I have a stable of canon lenses that it's taken me a few years to aquire...as for zoom, you would ned a zoom lens..the kit lens is 18 - 55mm and won't get you near what I suspect you are looking for. I use my 70 -300 most of the time, and then of course I am madly in love with the new IS 80-400 but that was a fortune...for portraits and everyday stuff, nothing can beat a 50mm prime and they are pretty cheap...jeez.....I'll shut up now! Sorry!!! I just know that some folks who went to DSLRS haven't been as happy as they thought they would be...Bob's Lumix....that's a good one! My advice would be to look at and play with a great many before you decide!!!
I agree with Gretchen. Get to a store and put your hands on some cameras and see how they feel. Also check out the menu options of the cam and how easy it is to manuever around in and change settings. My first digital was an ols Sony 3mp 10x optical 2.5 digital plus image stablization. Was a great cam. My favorite is my Nikon 5mp, clear sharp images but not good in low light and no image stabilization. I would consider either Canon or Nikon and look for the best deal. Money is always a deciding factor for me.
I have been looking and was able to hold the Nikon d40 and the Canon Rebel.....I like them both, I think.lol...
I kinda need image stablization ...it seems I am shaky somewhat but my current cam does have image stablization and I don't notice it in my pics. I took a couple pics with the rebel and then added on the 300mm lens and it was SUPER. I seen all the way across the store.....lol......But it was also another 200 just for the lens....lol...also another thing I am thinking about is NIkon just takes the sd cards, which is nice because that is what I have and I can just pop them out and pop em in the laptop and download. No wires anywhere......
also the nikon is cheaper........but when your talking about 600 compare to 800 though I wanna make sure and buy the right one the first time.....My cam only has 3x optical now, so anything would prolly be an improvement. Im just not sure if Im ready yet for a DSLR camera.... One of these days, I am gonna drag Gretchen over and borrow hers....lol....then ill know......:):):)
Honestly, either camera is going to provide excellent results. Both are great cameras and, especially if you're just entering the world of dSLRs, will be more than capable of doing anything you'd want. I personally use a Nikon d70s, which produces similar results to the d40. As others have mentioned, don't worry about megapixels - I've printed photos from my d70s at up to 18x24 and was more than happy with the results.
What you may find limiting, as you progress, is the kit lens. Particularly if you choose Canon - Nikon's kit lens has a reputation as being a bit nicer than Canon's. Not that you can't take nice photos with the kit lens - I used mine for about a year before I felt the need to upgrade.
I spent hours researching what to buy.. looking back, I should have just made my choice and spent that time out taking photos.. which is the best advice I can offer.
gretchensteele 09-03-2007, 20:19 ya know everybody fusses about canon's kit lens..but I've always had good results with it....but nothing can beat my old canon "nifty fifty" LOL
Probably the lens I use the most is the 70-300.....
Nikon! Can't beat Nikon's optics! For the money, the D series cameras are awesome! That's my vote. :)
gretchensteele 09-28-2007, 17:05 :p Canon I had to that ya know... LOL
Really like I told Bam, it's about findng the camera that works well for you..
The way hunting season is going so far, It looks like it will be a while.......we went to dunns again tonight :( lol
thanks for the tips and replies though guys and gal......
chymerikaen 09-28-2007, 22:56 Canon! All the way! I'm all about the Canons!
But that because Canon makes the best pro DSLR on the market, and one day, when I eventually upgrade to the big guns, I won't have to change out all of my lenses and everything. I've heard good things about the Nikons, though the D40x is supposed to be a substantial upgrade over the D40.
gretchensteele 09-29-2007, 07:47 I think I would go with D40x too over the D40..if I ever switched to Nikon..ROFL...
I can't afford to invest in another whole batch of lenses...
and canons are durable cameras..very durable...
an old phhoto "theory" was that Canon's were used primarily by wildlife, sports, and outdoor photogs and Nikons by fashion, wedding, indoor and portrait guys..don't know how true that still is though...
I think tha was was based on the subtle difference in how they render the image...
Wait a min. what's the d40x? is tha by nikon.....the d40 is by canon I know....whats the difference in the prices?
I know the 2 I looked at the nikon was about 200 bucks cheaper.....
However, I don't do fashion, weddings stuff......lol.......
Ya'll know my cam would be outside most of the time....boat, woods, campgrounds......I need something durable.......
I also need a job now! :)
chymerikaen 09-29-2007, 11:21 The 40D is Canon's latest, but the D40 is by Nikon, and the D40x is Nikon's recent upgrade. Confused yet? I'm personally looking at the Canon 30D because I like the true spot metering and because of the faster frames/minute. I decided on it over the 400D (which is the Rebel Xti) because of the magnesium, more durable body and because, since I have larger hands, it's a better fit.
I just don't know that much about the Nikons, to be honest. But comparatively, the D40x is supposed to be a better entry to midlevel DSLR than the Canon 400D -according to all the photo mags I read.
Ok I knew the first....I didn't know that the nikon had a D40x......lol..I am afraid to ask how much they are....oh lord do I need a job.....lol......
chymerikaen 09-29-2007, 15:33 Best Buy has the D40 (with 6.1 megapixels) for about $550, and the D40x (with 10.2 megapixels) for $750.
I'm in the same lot as you, Bam! I desperately want a new camera, but I need to get a job!
lifestudent55 09-29-2007, 15:34 Now if only I had a whole bunch of 'discretionary funds' laying around to spend on a camera.
