View Full Version : Eight Corner School House...
FunGusAmonGus 08-18-2007, 12:40 Charter Oak School is one of the last remaining eight sided school houses left in the country. It was designed this way to maximize lighting and to help the teacher organize her classes. Its one mile west of Schuline, IL ...hehe ..like youall are goinna know where Schuline is:D .Sorry G. lifestudent55 08-18-2007, 15:15 Bob, you beat me to that comment (about Fungus's hat). I was thinking it then saw your post.
Would that be close to Baldwin Rd. then? I hadn't seen any octagonal schoolhouses before. You did it justice with your photos.
FunGusAmonGus 08-18-2007, 17:15 actually I was more familar with the hickory stick....
That's neat Fungus.....My daugther got chose to go to the Purdy School last year at John A and it was purdy neat! lol.... She was excited out of the grade schools they could only pick 20 to go since it is just a one room class. That's when the first book of the day was the BIBLE something kids don't even know what it is anymore....She said the teacher came in and they couldn't be married then. She said she asked each one what they did that morning for their chores, like milk the cow or get the eggs, and then it was time for class. .She said the boys and girls lined up separate, they had to leave their chair from one side and she got to use a slate and chalk to write with.
"She said mom they only got ONE chalk all day"....lol.
She also got to use a quill pen and dab the ink which she thought was really neat. She thought it was werid to have all those ages in there. They also had to bring a sack lunch and eat togather and then play with wooden blocks and such for recess. Oh yea and then she said mom we cheated today I said oh yea , how and she said They let us use the running toliets to use a bathroom. I told her that was prolly a good thing....lol....kids.....
lifestudent55 08-18-2007, 18:05 actually I was more familar with the hickory stick....
I can believe that! :D
Bambam, there are a few of us who have used quill pens (for fun to see if it really worked) when we were growing up. I've also had to take the "path out back" a few times in the middle of the night. We didn't worry about the mud daubers, but the paper wasps were pretty mean.
My dad went to a 1-room school in Indiana. Dad had to ride a mule to school. He was also born in a log cabin, the remains of which were still in a field north of Salem, IN the last time we went by there. No Funguy, I'm not making this stuff up.
FunGusAmonGus 08-18-2007, 18:11 my Dad was born under a oak tree down in the pasture. My Grandma was cuttin across the pasture to try and get to the Docs house and "sat down and had Howard right there" as she used to say..pointing to the spot...
lifestudent55 08-18-2007, 18:31 Is this where I say "truth or dare"?
