Youth deer hunt at Baldwin Lake
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will conduct a drawing Sept. 12 for 26 youths to hunt deer during the Youth Deer Hunting Season Oct. 6-7.
The special hunt will occur on part of the Baldwin Lake rest area at the Kaskaskia River State Fish and Wildlife Area between Baldwin Lake and the Doza Creek Waterfowl Management Area.
"This special hunt area straddles two counties," said Brian Mahan, IDNR district wildlife biologist.- "A participating youth must have either a St. Clair County or Randolph County youth deer season hunting permit."
To be eligible for the inhouse drawing, the youth's name, mailing address, and county in which their permit is valid -- St. Clair or Randolph County --must be clearly printed on a standard postcard and received at the site office by Sept. 10. The site address is:- Kaskaskia River State Fish and Wildlife Area, 10981 Conservation Road, Baldwin IL 62217.
Mahan said the 26 designated hunting locations will be allocated in random order, but will try to keep obvious siblings next to each other as much as possible.
Each of the 26 youths whose names are drawn will receive information about the hunt, a map showing the location of their assigned hunting spot and nearby parking area, plus a special pass allowing temporary access to the area to do some limited scouting and to erect a deer stand before the season.
The youth hunter and his or her accompanying adult must be in an elevated stand at least 6 feet high and have to be within 10 yards of the designated hunting spot.
According to statewide regulations, each youth deer hunting season permit holder must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult who possesses a valid FOID card.-The adult is not allowed to hunt.
Mahan also reminded those interested in the youth deer hunting season that the rest of Kaskaskia River SFWA and Turkey Bluffs SFWA south of Chester also are open and have no special drawing.
