View Full Version : Coyote problems?
Disclaimer: I will post this here since I don't consider it a topic for the "small game" section of the board (and more people probably look here :) ). I would understand if you want to move it, Bob.
I would like to know if anyone has a coyote problem in their area, one of my buddies and I go occaisionally (without too much success, but we have fun) and I don't really think we have the concentrations to have a good hunt around where we go. Around my parents house, they can be found, but only if you are there at the right time, the pack around there travels quite a bit. So if anyone has a yote problem and would like some taken out (probably after deer season, since the woods will be disrupted by us), post it up here and where it is, I live around Trenton, and about an hour away is fine, but I don't want to go toooo far unless its a really concentrated and large place, since it takes a lot of area to hunt them, you can run out of it real quick. We usually take either 2 HP rifles or a rifle and 12 ga for close in work, and you would be welcome to participate if you want to. I don't know how much time we will have to go, but post if you want and we/I will see when or if we can find time later on.
Thanks
I can't help you on the spot to go unless public land is ok with you, I see a pretty good amount of coyotes running around. I've never done it myself, but would like to give it a shot (pun intended), if you have room for 1 more?:o I got a .222 that will reach out and touch em without too big a boom. (used to be my whistle-pig gun back in PA.)
Well, I know somewhere like Peabody is 22 LR only for yotes, but I am not sure about places like Kaskaskia River SFWA. I'm not going without my AR...:)
You got any farmer friends around those parts?
I bet that AR is fun, I got an SKS that would be just as cool to try...:p
Maybe I could put up a flyer at the the store? I'm sure there are farmers that would be your friend if you volunteered to whack some yotes. When I'm working nights, driving in, I see some guys in trucks with antennas that are tracking coyote dogs.
I have been with some dog guys before, that's fairly effective, but I don't plan on doing it again, something about the quality of the guys I went with put a bad taste in my mouth...
Another kind of place I always thaught would be a good place to try would be a private game farm, like with released birds and stuff like that, you would think the yotes would be thick and the owners don't want their birds getting ate up, the nice thing about yote hunting is it is much easier to get permission for than something where you are taking a "valuable" game animal.
The AR is fun, I haven't spent as much time shooting it as I would like, but I get right at 1 MOA at 100 yds with it, I need to set up a metal plate and practice out to 300 soon, and get some handloads going, I have a 16" barrel and 3-9 scope on it right now, it was bought for coyote hunting (at least that was my semi-justification :) )
Truck hunting would be fun if it were legal in this state, but our nanny state government likes to suck all our fun away...
A flyer sounds great, but I don't want to put out the impression that have tons of time to go, but I would like to have a few quality hunts.
Do you guys ever try baiting them in? Ive used dead fish, deer carcassas, and dead ducks or rabbits. Usually it works. I have a 30-06 but never used it for coyote hunting. Usually use the semi auto 22 mag.
I haven't done too much baiting, not sure what the best approach would be, how long before do you set your bait out and how long do you watch it, what process do you follow?
I am sure there would be a bunch of us willing to assist farmers with their coyote problems. Problem is we do not know who will allow us access to their land. If you need another just holler. I have a Stevens/Savage .223 ready and waiting for them.
Steven K 12-14-2006, 11:24 I am a farmer I always see some coyotes running around while chieseling in the fall If i had some dogs i would probally be chasin them now. I know alot of other farmers to that i could probaly get permission from but yet there are alot of guys around the NA area who do their fair share of chasin
I nominate Steven to set up a Yote shoot. Ther are at least 3 of us willing to go...
I usually set the bait abot 10 hours before. Like i would set it at 3 pm and let it sit till about 11 pm. Then hunt it all early morning . Just bring a light and if you get the suspicion theres something shine it on the bait. Try using a predator call too. they can be effective. best time i think for baiting would be from 9 pm too about 3 or 4 in the morning. Maybe we could do some yote hunting sometime? I got a few places we could try out.
Josh, We both know where there are plenty of deer carcasses. We just need a fresh one to be dumped...
Steven K 12-19-2006, 15:53 Just let me know when and i can talk to some people and hopefully get something worked out
