Well, back from 3 days at Pyramid. 1st day was ok, but it got progressively hotter as the weekend wore on.

We were in Boulder CG, and had the ENTIRE campground to ourselves. Matter of fact only 2 or 3 vehicles drove through the entire time, and one was the CPO.

Now either we're crazy for camping during the beginning of a heat wave. In which case this belongs in the redneck thread. (You should've seen us all cooling down under the spigot in front of the Park Office.:p Kids in diapers and all...)

OR
people are now so spoiled when it comes to camping, that they won't go unless they have electricity to run their A/C. My old Shasta doesn't have it, but after this weekend the wife wants me to install it.

OR
is this the reason why the park has less visitors? No power or running water in the CG, hence they have an excuse to trade the land away.

It was too hot to drink beer:(. But I did my best;).

I vote with the spoiled...Critter and I tent camp, often at hike in sites or the most primitive and the the primitive areas are usually pretty empty anymore...Pyramid has been empty (or close to it) each time we have camped there...which is why we like it alot!!!
My niece and her family camp the same way we do usually in Missouri and have the same experience of no other campers around...and yet when they roam the parks, the sites with electric and water hook ups are full....
Sorry but I am too spoiled I suppose to go in a heat wave like this...I just can't with the MS...once my body temp goes up, everything quits..I can't talk, walk or much else...

Gretchen, it isn't just MS, (that must suck,) but as a Northerner, I can't function in this kind of heat either. :o I turn into a wuss.... all we did out there was move the chairs around to the best shade and drink water.

I admit that while we were tent camping at Rend the past few days we did pick a site with electricity to plug in the fan and the trolling motor battery charger. We found something neat at Wal-mart. They had personal air conditioners. You fill the bin with ice cubes and the fan blows over the water that drips as the ice melts. It didn't even make a noticeable dent in the daytime temps, but it sure cooled the tent down at night.

Yesterday morning I woke to see a flock (or whatever you call it with turkeys) of wild turkeys in the campsite next to us. I woke my wife up in time for her to see them before they ambled off into the woods. I haven't hooked up the camera to see if I caught any of them (old habits, I started to say "on film").

My wife made the mistake of leaving a bag of marshmallows in the tent during the day. We returned to find the bag opened and several of the marshmallows eaten. We both laughed about it. A bag of marshmallows isn't worth getting angry at raccoons when we're guests in their home. Besides, we thought it was pretty funny. I left the bag in the grill (fireplace or whatever you call it). Yesterday I found the remains of the bag next to the woods with the rest of the marshmallows missing. At that point the bag went in the trash.
