Just wondered who's headed out for honkers? I've been seeing a few while duck hunting, but now they're fair game. :D I'm not a real goose hunter, as I don't have all the decoys, or the $$$ to buy em. I also don't really know of any fields with permission to get after em. Good luck out there all.

I saw your truck down by the "creek" Sunday morning. After the deer in there? There were guys on the lake by the road hunting geese, but it was froze tight. I saw 6 deer run across the field up by the highway.

Has no one shot at any geese? How do we go from 10 to 70 degrees in 5 days? Everything frozen to swimming weather, "...just wait 5 minutes; it'll change."

Hey DaveV. I'd like to try it out down there sometime. What is the procedure on getting out there, and knowing where to go? They have a daily morning draw?

sorry bob should have been more specific. we lease ground a mile or so from the superlake refuge.we have hunted the draw quite a bit in years past and usually did pretty good. if you want to go i would get a map and drive around and find the bilnd locations first. you can get lost real easy on those roads in the dark. it's a pretty big place. most blinds you need a boat but there are some holes you can walk in and wade. and some holes all you need is a jon boat.

Bob, there are some pits down at Pyramid that look like they would be pretty good for geese. I don't remember the pit numbers, but there was one in the Denmark unit that is out on a pond in the middle of a corn field that had a bunch of mallards on it and a bunch of geese in the corn. Hundreds of specks too. There is also another one in the Captain unit that is in the middle of a flooded field that looks good. The only problem that I see with these pits is that you have to park a couple hundred yards away and carry everything in. You pretty much need a cart to carry decoys. I am off all next week and plan on getting after some geese.

QA, I remember when my GSP looked like that. They are running fools. Do you have a private pit by Baldwin? They usually hold a lot of birds once it gets cold. Do you ever pull in any snows?

went out this morning to the pit again. had a flock of about 40 mallards wanting to land on the pond but my buddy and i was just about to climb in and they saw us and rolled out. did get 2 snow geese, they were just some low flyers. saw a good number of canadas but just couldn't get them in close enough. there were people in all the pits around us so i think there was a lot of pressure on them. anyone else do any good lately?

Steven K

I got to go out for about 1.5 hours this morning. The birds were flying pretty early, and I managed 1 hen Mallard. I missed a few today, darnit. Sounded like family fun day at the range on the river. Seriously, there was a group burning lead from what sounded like a .22 to a fully auto AR-15, and everything in between. Wish I coulda stayed out longer.

Bob, were you hunting that sunflower pond again? I was out on just the other side of that pond. I heard alot of shots right after shooting hours started and then it dropped off real quick. Only got to shoot at 1 bird and that didnt work out too well....

I stayed out till about 1030. It seemed like they were really flying well right after hours began but then I only saw a handful more of ducks and when you have 3 or 4 people calling them and taking passing shots, its not really worth sitting out there when you have alot of xmas shopping left to do. So I bailed out early. There was 6 boats at the ramp and I was the last one to leave at 1030 so Im guessing everyone else wasnt having any luck either. Do you do good back there at the sunflower pond (I think thats what it is...?) Seems like it would be good since we always see birds flying in that area.

Steven K

went out this morn for 2 hrs, saw about 60 birds right at shooting time but none to work, no shots were fired in the whole swamp, sure wish a big push would come through, oh well better luck next time

Bob
12-26-2006, 09:49
I think we got some birds in the area, but not a huge amount. No major fronts in the near forecast, be happy there are some here to hunt, it could be all locked up, and nothing around. I need a day off, I wanna hunt.

hunted our place at pyramid on sun and mon. sun me and my brrother killed 4 canadas 2 snows and a speck. mon 3 of us killed 3 wigeon 3 canadas and 3 snows. lots of ducks flyng both days. seem like we only see ducks really moving is the real crappy rainy days. decent ammount of shooting coming from the public areas. saw specks and snows migrating back north. not a good sign. hopefully it will get cold and stay cold for a change. good hunting guys.

Bob
12-31-2006, 05:32
Yesterday sucked. Saw even less than the day before, and nothing worked for us. I'm up, should I even go try??? Rained all night, could be ok??? I'll report when I get back....

Bob
12-31-2006, 10:21
Nope it sucked again. 55 degrees at 0600. Nothing has to move. We need some 30 degree mornings at least. I bought 1000 gram waders for cryin out loud, I need it to be cold.

I drove by there yesterday and thought the same thing as you fellas. :D I saw geese flying around those new "house farms" out on Greenmount too. Man I hate looking at those. (Starting from the $300,000's!!!, yeah right, they don't even have trees.) I remember when that was a one lane dirt road... I haven't shot my last 3 times out, it's getting old, and the dog is getting bored.

dave v
01-04-2007, 18:51
well how can i say this, this sucks. big fat 0 today. saw the fewest geese at pyramid that i have seen in the last 2 seasons. specks are almost totally gone, the 10-15,000 snows we had yesterday are all gone. all but about 100. with the full moon they could have fed all night and stayed there today. the canadas are the big locals and the 4 we have here will fly 2 miles out of their way to avoid our field. saw more snows and ducks migrating back north today. weather man said look for winter to really hit us between the 12 and the 20. i hope to god he's right or this forum will be changed to a golf forum next year. i'm getting real close to starting to pull canada decoys and replace them with snows. at least you can count on them showing up every year. my buddy is seeing wood ducks on the asskaskia already. back at it on sunday. good luck guys.

Best day in a long time, i was a working around the farm tonight and noticed what appeared to be two ducks sitting on the old fish pond, now being the avid duck hunter i am, and the bag of ducks i've killed:mad: i decided it would be a good idea to kill these quackers, so i went on down there and sure enough there were two big ol mallards sitting there, so i aimed at the drake, and shot the hen on her way up, now the drake was the prettiest greenhead i ever did kill and for sure the plumpest.

dave v
01-12-2007, 19:07
hunted our place at pyramid thursday.pulled 150 canada sillos to make room for 25 dozen snow sillosocks and 2 snow kites and what do we do? see very few snows and 3 of us killed 6 honkers. 3 of which were cacklers. saw decent ammount of canadas that actually worked instead of avoiding us. all but a few snows are gone. but i immagine they will show back soon. hopefully some honks will also show up. did see alot of ducks though. lots of groups of pintails. good luck guys and avoid the ice.

Steven K

Of course I had to work yesterday, but I had one buddy hunting and the five of them shot 10 geese and another buddy hunted on the MS river and the four of them shot 8 geese. They were all banded and two of them had consecutive band numbers.
