Bring your kids, nephews, nieces, neighbors kids, any youngster you think will enjoy a day outdoors learning about hunting, shooting, wildlife, and conservation!
It is this Saturday at Randolph County Conservation Area, (the New Lake) at the group camp area. Randolph County Conservation Area is located North of Chester on Palastine Rd. http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/PARKS/R4/RAND.HTM

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g125/huntrz_2006/3179.jpg

We will have Archery, Shotgun, BB Gun, the DNR Wildlife trailer and also the Rock Climbing Wall stations! kids are split into groups and then rotated through the different stations. Food for the kids and the parents, lots of great prizes and giveaways for the kids.
Sorry, I'm not sure about registration time but will post later today after I talk to chapter President. If you need to know right away call 618-282-2275, and ask for details on Jakes Day.
This is a great event for the kids, We've been doing this for about 10 years, so I have seen some of the same kids over the years grow into responsible adults. Most kids are disappointed when they get too old to attend.
See ya there, if you need directions, I can post here.
This event is possible through donations and the help of volunteers who care about the future of hunting and the outdoors. When I see these kids I know not all will be hunters when they grow up, but at least they will have a better understanding of the outdoors and hopefully make wise decisions when it's time to vote on issues that affect our Hunting & Outdoor Heritage.

I hope you had a large turnout and everybody had a great time. jakes days are great for the kids in the county Bring back the memories of taking my boys years back NOW MY YOUNGEST HELPS TO PUT THEM ON. That tells me two things #1 I am getting old and #2 JAKES days had a positive impact on him.

we had a great turnout even though it was Hot-Hot-Hotter than Hell!
we had about 145 kids and probably 300 parents! just joking on the parents, but there were more than usual which is great, gets them more involved with there kids in the outdoors, the parents even helped out. we had 300 hot dogs and ran out before all the parents or committee members got to eat, but thats ok, everyone had a great time. here are a few photos...

Glad you posted this Huntrz.. for some reason I was confused and thought it was at the shooting complex this year! Thanks!

That was a different chapter G, the Turkey Bluffs Chapter still has theirs at R.C.C.A., but we did move the date this year to try and get some cooler weather.

we also gave out prizes for the most fish and the smallest fish in each Derby, all winners received a Rod & Reel Combo and Tackle Box.

Special Thanks to Mark Yehling,
Fishing Coordinator for the Southern Illinois Urban Fishing Program!
He brought all the rods & reels for the kids
and gave a great seminar before each Fishing Derby.

Thanks everyone for your positive comments.
These programs rely on volunteers to coordinate the planning and help out on the day of the event, every year it seems to be harder and harder to get people to commit to help. It always amazes me that everyone thinks this is a great thing but are always too busy to help out. :(
Programs like this are in jeopardy of disappearing unless more people step up to the plate to help out. The JAKES Day program is the one single most positive thing I have ever come across that promotes the outdoor sports to kids, it's one of the main reasons I joined the NWTF. Although started by the NWTF, other than the JAKES memberships which are paid for by national from money raised during our local banquet, everything is paid for with money raised by the local chapters and donations from local businesses.
Please seek out these local events and volunteer to help or make donations.

:)
