View Full Version : wireless pet fence
kramer820 12-08-2009, 08:56 Ive had my dog for about 4 months now and when I first got him I bought a pet safe wireless fence. It worked great up until this week. Hes been running down the street to the neighbors house and terrorising their dogs. The battery is not low I just changed it and tested it out on my self. Ouch . Has anyone used this product and had the same problem? I have a feeling that since it is winter time his coat might be thickening out and not making too good of a contact. Im gonna try and tightening up the collar a bit and see what happens. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Here is the product.

I have a wired version and find my dog will cheat on a dead battery, or loosely fit. I would tighten it up. Do you have the longer prongs on the collar? Overall, I think this is a great product if you use it correctly...
nuthouse 12-08-2009, 09:05 Dogs are smarter than we give them credit for sometimes. He may have figured out that the shock is over when he passes the "fence" line. Get enough momentum up and he can clear the "fence" easily. I had a dog that I swear loved getting zapped. He would jump back and forth for hours till the battery went dead then he'd come to the door and as soon as I replaced the battery, he would go right back to "fence" hopping. Hope yours doesn't have the same issue. Good luck with him and the "fence".
kramer820 12-08-2009, 09:09 I may have had the longer prongs at one time. About a month ago his collar rubbed a spot in his neck. It was raw so I loosened it. At the time we kept the collar on him at all times. His neck has healed so I probably should tighten it up and see what happens. I Definatly dont need my dog catcher taking my dog.
Chuck_050382 12-08-2009, 09:19 Did you have the collar for stubborn dogs? It works better than the standard collar.
I have the wired version.

I have the wired version.
Is this a joke??? I didnt know they made one.
DetectDave 12-08-2009, 09:47 My lab has the strongest collar and longest prongs they have. He is apparently heavily into masochism cuz he will break that fence whenever he feels like running the 1.5 miles into town to our friends house. Read at least twice a week or during storms when we are not home. I know it works because he does not like the ride home when I slow up passing over the wire at the driveway edge. He likes to get the buzzzzz his way and not mine..LOL I'm surprised he doesn't want it strapped over his nether regions. Dang dog.
As a side note, you know you can open that box up and crank it up a couple of levels in 2 different ways.

as a side funny story. My parent who also use the same system, and their Golden Retriever got out of their yard went down the road and then got stuck in the neighbors yard because they also use the underground fence. They think he was chasing another dog at the time.
hobiecat83 12-08-2009, 10:32 I've been getting discouraged by my dogs that only seem to mind the fence when it is convenient for them. Remember that a stern "No No bad dog!" hurts them much more than an electrical shock! Haha. I do hate to see them sad though.

It has a 6 level adjustment on the outside. Are you saying that you can go beyond that?
DetectDave 12-08-2009, 10:53 I think there is another switch inside as well if I'm not mistaken. Like a power doubler like ya have on a blender..LL

Unfortunately, it may take quite a bit of training to get your dog back in the routine....
I've got a wired fence I installed myself on 2 acres of my land. One of my dogs figured out he could deal with the pain and the fence is useless for him.... My other dog is scared to death of it and it works great. When it's set on high, it will knock you back! That's holding the collar in my hand, crap, I don't have the balls to touch it to my neck!!! :D:D
Once they figure out they can deal with the pain, it's all over..... Thankfully my pup who's immune to it is getting a bit older and doesn't like to leave the yard as much.
kramer820 12-09-2009, 08:25 I turned it all the way up and tightened the collar. I guess he was used to dealing with the weaker shock and a loose collar. He walked across the line and rolled when it hit him. He ran straight into the trash cans next to the garage. Poor dog didnt know what hit him. Lets just say that he probably wont try walking past that beeping noise again.
kramer820 12-09-2009, 08:26 at least for a while.
gretchensteele 12-09-2009, 09:01 My experience with several different types of those fences wasn't all that great - but I think it was my dogs not the product -
They essentially didn't give a rats butt.. you could just see them give it the eye - grit their teeth and then go right over it..
Since we're so close to the highway and the heavy truck traffic from the mine - I finally fenced 2/3 of our back piece in in regular chain link fencing. (oh yeah - it was pricey) I feel better.. the dogs run at will back there, and I just didn't feel secure enough with others. All it took was losing Dutch to a coal truck and that settled it for me.
Dolly was trained from the get go to stay out of the front yard - and even now she looks around like she's gonna get clobbered if I take her through front to get in the car etc..
kramer820 12-09-2009, 09:14 I worry that Grunt will get scared that he will get shocked anytime I want to take him hunting. I guess it will take a few times draging him across that line.
Try using a single entry and exit point when you leave the fence area. And put him on a lead before crossing. Once the routine is set it will work...
