duckboy - you might try looking for one of the retriever groups in you area -
Scott Huschle and JPH here are both good resources. I can't think of anyone off the top of my head that's close to you, but I bet somebody here will know of someone or can point you in the right direction :)

Definitely get with a group like HRC. Read books, watch videos, ask questions and absorb as much info as you can.

Decide what you want to accomplish and use a progression one step at a time. If you start skipping steps you will do nothing but cause problems down the road.

HRC... they will help both you and your dog learn... Even if you don't want to compete in hunt tests, you will gain all the knowledge you need to have a good hunting dog...
