View Full Version : Well, my buck season is over...
Another beautiful morning in the woods. 14 degrees, sunny, and no wind. Had to break out the classic woolrich pants today. I think I've only had to wear them 3 times since moving out here. I went out about 0730, and got to my spot at 0758. I was overlooking a dry swamp surrounded by acres of willow thicket, sitting on the ground. Of course I hear something behind me in the thick stuff, and see a deer moving my way, miraculously, It stands broadside in a perfect little tunnel though the willows. Nice doe I think. BOOM. Smoke cloud hangs out in front for what seems like an eternity. Then I see the deer flop once. DOWN right there. Nice, Reload. I pace it off at 50 yards. I was on my stool for all of 27 minutes. Probably the only place in 20 acres you can see that far. Unfortunately I get there, and it was a spike 3 3/4 inchers. I don't use a scope, and didn't have time to glass either. That's the 1st deer I've shot at with a gun in abut 12 years, and I gotta say it was pretty fun regardless. Oh well freezer is pretty full now. Just baldies if I want another one. I had the camera, but forgot to put the card in it, so no field shots. I'll post some classic truck bed pics I guess. BTW deer carts rule...
Where are all the people??? This ain't like PA. I got plenty of public land with very little pressure. Guess people don't like the cold???
Here's the monster...

flatlander 12-08-2006, 10:46 Well that answers my question on the other post. LOL
Lot of fare weather and or part time hunters here you know.
No internal memory in your cam ?
No internal memory in your cam ?
NOPE:mad: Maybe Santa brings me a nice new one w/ 10 or 12 optical zoom, and 7+ mp???;) digital zoom is worthless. Anyone w/ any reccommendations on a nice camera w/ decent "reach"? Wildlife photography you need to be able to ZZZOOOOOMMM.:p
flatlander 12-08-2006, 11:07 What price range are you looking for ?
I propose that we all go fishing this spring and Bob brings the deer sticks! :D

I can buy the part time stuff. Some folks only get so much free time. But with the right gear and clothing, this is the best deer hunting weather there is. I took me a long time to learn to dress correctly, and that is key to being able to be out in these conditions
.
Todays clothes:
Polypro Polar-tec long underwear ($35)
Moisture wicking shirt (not Under Armor.. too pricey; Spalding brand $15)
Fleece sweatpants ($15)
Woolrich pants (these'll cost ya, but last a lifetime; $100ish)
Polypro sock liners/ and nice thick Cabelas hiking socks, liners $1.50 socks $12)
2 fleece zip ups (didn't really need a coat with no wind; only wore 1 waliking. $15 each)
Danner Frontier boots; 400 gram ($165)
Cheesy orange stocking cap and thin orange vest ($5)
Deer in the freezer = PRICELESS
What are some of you guys favorite cold weather gear???
What price range are you looking for ?
$500ish dollars

I asked on the trail camera forum I get on.
Some of those guys know there stuff when it comes to digital cam's, I'll let you know when I find out something.
Congratulations,
I would like to go out but I did something to my knee and have to to the surgeon later on. He will probably want to cut on it. So my deer hunting is done for the rest of the year.
Jim
Try duck hunting at Carlyle lake. There will be plenty of people around.
Jim, Do you have an ML tag? If so what co? Or even bow. If your knee is bum, I may have a spot or 2 I can put you on that is an easy walk if you're able. If not, that sucks. We'll get on on one next season.

No way man, never have, and never will. I'd rahter be skunked than fight that fight. ;)
Nice buck Bob-O. Both of your bucks outweigh mine, but mine scores more than both of yours put together. Don't matter though. Just glad I got to harvest my buck with you and the fam. Was out duck hunting this morning and had to bust up an inch of ice to set my spread. Saw a flock of 25 geese take off from the other side of the pond but they must have been on the land. Couldn't keep the decoys moving so packed up at 8 and left. Today is the last day of Rifle Season in Pa. so it was worth it not to be out for the deer. Heard about 7-8 shots before I packed it up so they were killin em this morning. Saw about 15-20 trucks from the pond to the house about 2 miles. I'll wait til late season to get back in stand for the deer. No orange regs and 600,000 less hunters in the woods. YAY!!
Thanks bro, (aka smart ass) :) Maybe next year is my year for the wall hanger? I got 2 doe tags, but not much room left in the freezer. Maybe the neighbor will want one? All froze here too man. Weather is supposed to warm up, and rain. It'll be a few weeks before we get any good duck numbers back, barring more cold weather keeping everything locked up... Now go shoot one of those deer that made it through the orange army invasion.
