I never knew there were crappie in there. Some of my buddies use the ramp there to fish the Muddy for cats. There is a S%&* pot of snakes around there for sure. My wife and I camped there right after our honeymoon many years ago. We set camp in the dark. The squirrel hunters adjacent to us had a line of beer tabs 42 feet long for their week in camp..LOL We got up the next AM and counted 132 snake holes within about 30 feet around our tent.

Isn't that the same thing they call dogfish? In Louisiana they called em grennels. About the only thing they're good for is fertilizer. That or just for practice. Meats too soft and mushy to eat.

I am pretty sure I knew those guys. They were friends of my dad's and they would go down there every year and hunt, play cards, fish and drink beer. I went down there a few times with my dad and those guys were true outdoorsmen. For dinner every night there was squirrel and rattlesanke on the menu along with fritters, cornbread and fried fish. That same group of guys also threw a wild game feed every year that supported a schalorship fund at John A. Logan college. Those guys all worked together and the first few years they did that feed it was to put the children through college of a friend of theirs who died on the job. i don't know how many years ago that was but it has grown to feed lots of men and is a big fundraiser for that scholarship fund. One of the originals of that group who was one of my dads best friends died about 7 years ago and he was truly a great outdoorsmen.

There are some pretty good fish in the bayou but alot of crap fish too from the river. If you ever go frog gigging down there be sure and stay away from the orange eyes looking back at you.

Interestingly enough now that you say that, I was expecting a rowdy crew all night long. They were the most polite bunch of fellas and after 8P, not a peep except Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I remember and old fella here that ate them, he always said that you have to fillet them before they die and he would catch one clean it put the meat on ice then back to catch another, I never tried one but it sure was a big mess of meat when he was done, over here on the kaskaskia in the hot day time when the river is low, ofcourse that would be all the time...

One of the guys in that tribe dave was talking about was skinning a rattler once (with the head removed) and when he started peeling the skin of the head end of it twisted up and popped his arm by where he was holding it. Scared the hell out of him and he threw that thing out into the bayou.

Yeah those were a great group of guys, a bit onry but not troublemakers.

Most of those guys are still kicking but I'm not sure they still go down there every year, or at all. The guy I knew of the bunch the best died a while back but I see his son fairly often and I will ask him next time I see him if there are any that still camp out down there.

Turkey Bayou was the first place I ever caught crappie. My dad used to take me down there a lot when I was in grade school. Seemed like we always caught some crappie. I remember catching a dogfish as well. I'm sure there is a little bit of everything in there.

I'll bet ya never shot a .22 at trash cans either did ya, or skipped the bullets across the water to hit the ones across the lake?
