Yep you can use a crossbow. Bowfishing is covered under fishing regulations not under hunting, so the same restrictions do not apply.
AMS makes an adapter to fit their reel to a crossbow. Check it out at http://www.amsbowfishing.com/

I have never been.... Always wanted to try it, just never had the chance.
Can you use a crossbow? I have a permit to use one in Illinois, although I never have... It just doesnt seem the same as with a bow...

We have several crossbow shooters in our group. I mainly shoot a Black Widow recurve but also have an Excalibur Crossbow set up for bowfishing. They are loads of fun. No, not the same as bowfishing with a stickbow, but fun and challenging in their own way. On our site, www.illinoisbowfishing.com we have a section in the "How To" area showing how to set one up. AMS makes a new mount for crossbows so you can put a reel on easily. Retriever reels and Muzzy predator bolts are the best gear to use with one. There also is a crossbow bowfishing forum at www.bowfishusa.com .

Were they on foot or in a boat? I'm kinda curious if it's someone we know.

Guess you'll just have to find more spots. :D That is one thing about most bowfishers, they'll share info on hotspots. Try that with most Bass fishermen. I always get a kick out of a couple of guys at work that regularly steer others astray. They even spent a day showing their "buddy" all the wrong places to fish on a lake.:rolleyes:

They were in a boat. Looked like a younger guy with a recurve, and an older fella drivin the troller from the rear. The boat wasn't set up as a bowfishin boat... just a flatbottom....

That just ain't cool... I may not give you the exact GPS coords, but I'll tell you what to expect where....
