View Full Version : Late season; Who's headed out?
Who's breaking out the bow for late season? We still have almost a month and a half of deer season with the bow, next weekend is muzzleloader, and also late season antlerless in the middle of January. I plan on hunting up until the end, but I'll stick with the duck hunting as well. Plenty of season to go, no need to worry about tag soup.:D Keep the faith, the deer don't quit moving.
flatlander 12-05-2006, 17:40 Definitely !
I will be out until the end of bow season.
Going this Thur and any other chance I get.
i'm heading out tomorrow and every day i can til the end of season. :)
Bowtechman 12-06-2006, 14:54 I’m headed out as soon as my shoulder gets better. I love late season, woods are empty. Ducks are fun to pass the time but the old bow is hard to beat. Ducks with a bow now that’s a thought. Saw two bobcats the last night of shotgun. Any one seen any big deer?
I'll be bow hunting til the end. Still have a few tags left:)
My brother in law shot a 17 pt last weekend with his muzzle loader.

That is a unique buck, what did he age him at ?
WOW! That IS a cool lookin buck. Welcome to the site Shawn. What county was he taken in? I'll be out w/ my ML tomorrow.
Not sure but we are guessing hes a young buck like 3.5 yrs old

He only field dressed at 150lbs with next to any fat on him, guess he was chasing the hell out of the does.
Brother in law shot him in Pinckneyville. Shot him at 40 yrs and dropped him in his tracks.
We mainly hunt perry county and sometimes Kaskaskia river.

I saw a guy on tv try for phesants w/ a recurve bow. I don't think he got one, but he was close a few times. Heck if we can shoot carp out of the air, why not try? Get some flu-flus. If you were really good you could try for doves:D . Phesants may be attainable, or geese maybe. Wonder if that would even be legal?
Ill be going out tomorrow bow hunting. Hey bob we should go bow hunting sometime. What about ducks this weekend? Give me a call tonight. or just pm me.

I've been off the last 2.5 days and haven't been able to bow hunt once.
I would be out with my bow and orange if I could convince the family to stop getting sick.

Looks like yet another shift in the weather for the region. Highs in the upper 50's, low 60's until at least the 20th. And lows look to be be above freezing the next 10 days as well. Not exactly prime deer weather, but no need to dress up like the kid in a Christmas Story either.:D

On the up side, looks like the swamps will open back up, and maybe we'll get some more ducks back:).
Quackaddict59 12-14-2006, 20:56 it was probably that so called hunter Tred barta, only a retard would try to shoot phesants with a recurve. he also tried and succeeded and shooting decoying geese. that'll never happen again.
flatlander 12-17-2006, 13:40 Went out yesterday evening (12/16) even though it was 58 degrees, seen one about 4:15pm.
Got him on a trail cam earlier in the week.

He should be a nice one in a year or two if he makes it that long.
Well does he meet your requirements if in range? That's an ok buck... Although my motivation has been sapped somewhat w/ no buck tag, I will still go out and try to fill my tags when time allows. My neighbor hasn't been able to hunt this year due to his wife having back surgery, and he'd more than appreciate one. And I'll probably see the biggest buck of my life outta the stand. I hope to at least get a pic or two. The experience is really what its all about anyway. At least for me. Maybe I'll learn a thing or two just by observing? I'll at least got to read some more of my book...

My goal is always to do one better, so maybe in a couple of years.
I still like seeing antler while in the stand no matter if its one I want to send an arrow at or not.

You must have my kind of luck. LOL

Yeah I tried that for about 4 years and ate tag soup and does. Not that there's anything wrong with that.;) I just am at the point right now where a deer on the gambrel is a great deer regardless of head gear. I'll pass on spikes and forkys, but a good buck is a buck for me right now. See my bow kill. Maybe I'll hold off again in the future. But I needed to shoot something this year, and I got that done.
Its funny i've been seeing alot of bucks moving around between 11am and 1pm.
I hunted friday morning. In total I saw 15 does. The closest ones were a group of 4. They had me pegged when an arrow in my quiver flicked on the edge of my stand. I had a staring contest for 15 minutes with 4 does. Talk about nerve racking. I was drawn once for about 3 minutes until my arm started locking up, and had to let down. But i ended up fooling them and shot one at 48 yards. A little trailing job, and I've got more meat in the freezer. :D
48 yards is long but I practice out to 65. 50 yards is definitely the max I would shoot. She was quartering a hair on the shot. But turned mid-flight so I hit her back a little. But I got into her kidneys so she didn't go very far. After it was all said and done I felt pretty good. Its not easy to fool 4 sets of eyes, when they know you're there.
Sorry no pics, my wife had the camera. She was only about a 60 lb'er (the deer).
WOW 48 yds on a 60 lb deer... Target would look like a pea to me. I took my quiver off my bow years ago:p. Now I zip tie it to my pack. Good job. I bet it'll taste like buttah...:D
flatlander 12-18-2006, 17:51 I take my quiver of once in the stand and mount it on this, which is screwed into the tree.

Same thing I use to mount trail cams in a tree. :)
