Beings how we used to be shotgun only, I'm kinda a "traditionalist". I have stuck with shotguns for deer. I have some revolvers that one day I guess I just have a shotgun mind.

When I was a little weed knocker I started out with a plain old single shot 20. Then I progressed into a 12 gauge Mossberg 500 deer combo from Sears for $229 (still got the receipt. With the smooth bore rifled sight deer barrel and a shot barrel I was thinking I was truly in the big leagues. But back then in actuality, I wasn't far off.

Eventually that led to buying a rifled barrel with rifled sights and that led to better shots.

But that was then and this is now. Nowadays I am still shooting a 12 gauge H&R Ultra Slug Hunter Deluxe - I cannot complain about accuracy. Bought my boys a 20 gauge standard version and I believe it to be even slightly more accurate. The 12 likes 3" Brenneke Golds & 2-3/4" Heavy Field Mags. The 20 loves the Brenneke 3-inchers.

The Mossberg has gotten a rifled/ported/red dot scoped barrel and is now used by a nephew. It shoots pretty darn good and it really likes the Remington BuckHammers.

My Father passed away and I have a wondeful old JC Higgins 12 gauge pump with a shortened barrel and rifled sights brazed on. I use this on occasion when I go into the thicker woods. It's a nice short and quick handling little 12 gauge. This gun likes the traditional "felt-wadded" Brennekes.

Lastly, I'm sending an H&R 20 gauge Topper single shot into H&R to have it fitted with a rifled and rifle sighted barrel. $58 + shipping. It will make a nice "extra" gun to have in case someone's gun has some sort of mishap.

So what do you guys shoot?

I use the trusty old A-5 and I bought my son one of the 20 guage 12 gauge H&R Ultra Slug Hunter Deluxe which is a tack driver. I'm a bit envious of him.

Never hunted deer with a shotgun... Used a 30-40 Krag and a .270 back in PA, now it's either the bow, or the .50 CVA Wolf.

I use a browning A-BOLT shotgun with a simmons scope, which is dead on at the 80-90 yrd range. Before that 12 guage 870 with a smooth bore, wasn't effective as the browning.

I use a Savage 12 ga. bolt action, synthetic stock, an extended rifled choke tube with 3" winchester sabot standard velocity slugs, simmons 1-5x20 scope, shoots really well, except it kicks like a frickin' mule on red bull! and I use this gun for turkey hunting also, so I get to resight it in for each season, love the abuse!

my wife shoots a youth model Remington 870 20 ga, fully rifled barrel, 4x32 scope, hornady slugs with ballistic tip, and that thing is a tack drivin' SOB!, sweet gun!

boy shoots a remington 870 12 ga, rifled choke, iron sites, with lightfield lite slugs, it does ok, but where his stand is the farthest shot would be about 40-50 yards, i think his farthest shot so far has been 20 yards.

I won both the Savage and remington 12 ga at NWTF banquets.

Last time I deer hunted I had a 870 12 gauge Wingmaster with a fully rifled Hastings barrel and a 4XSimmons scope on it. On my side I had a Ruger Vacquero chambered in .45 Long Colt. The 12 gauge was loaded with Lightfield Supreme sabots and the .45 was loaded with a Cor-Bon 265 gr. Bonded core hollow point.

... now it's either the bow, or the .50 CVA Wolf.

I also use the .50 CVA Wolf with a Red Head Scope during blackpowder season. During Shotgun Season I use a Mossberg 500 12 ga. with a rifled barrel and a Tasco red dot scope. I shoot the Lightfield slugs with my shotgun, they seem to do a great job, I had a TERRIBLE experience with Winchester Supreme's and do not recomend them to anyone. I also carry a Smith and Wesson 686 .357 Mag incase I am feeling a little crazy.

I'll be using my Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag, with a rifled barrel and 3X9 Bushnell, same set up I had back in Minnesota a while back. I used a Winchester Supreme 3 1/2" 3/4 ounce slug.....not much differemce between that set up and using a rifle really. I shot a small 4pt buck quartering away, through some trees at 125yards, that slug lifted him up and pushed him face first into the ground about 4 feet away. had to pull leaves out of his mouth. To qualify it, I missed on the first shot, had to aim a little higher. Hopefully I will be able to get out one way or the other in Illinois this fall. If not I have a Colorado Muzzleloader tag, and a Nebraska rifle tag.

Mossberg 500 with the rifled slug barrel. I have yet to have a deer walk away from that gun.

I dont hunt deer with guns, I have nothing against people that do just to me its not as fun to hit something far away as it is to get up close and personal like you do with a bow. But i do have an old 12 gauge my grandpa has handed down to me before his death that i use for bird hunting. gun has been handed down for years, not sure of the make but if i can get a pic of it i will post it for ya guys.

I have heard good things about the 535 from my father-in-law. I own 2 500's and love them.

I shoot a Remington Sportsman 12 with a Hastings rifled barrel and a Simmons shotgun scope. But to tell you the truth I'm more of a bow hunter.Gun hunting is for taking the kids along these days.

I use the same shotgun for upland and deer. It's your standard 870. Kendall bought me a barrel with a scope instead of the regular rifled barrel for my birthday. That giant front dot on the regular barrel and I just couldn't get along. (tho' I did get my first shotgun deer with it last November)

I have an 870 Wingmaster that I've used for upland hunting (birds, rabbits, etc.). I have fired buckshot and slugs through it in Michigan, but it's not designed for that. I was wondering if you have separate barrels for slugs and birdshot.

I have a regular shot barrel and the rifled barrel. (well, two rifled barrels now, one cantilevered and one with iron sights.)

So I take it you stick pretty much to slugs with that shotgun now, right?

Slugs with the slug barrel. With the upcoming dove season, I'll be putting the smoothbore barrel back on. If you're not familiar with changing the barrels, it only takes 1-2 minutes to change them. :)

(Nice hat, I know. It was really, really cold)Notice the hand on the deer's head. Mossberg delivers the closer! :D

Gee, ya think she has something to do with HuntingNet?

It's funny how I can read better during the day than at 1am. Yeah, I get it now. I've never tried changing barrels on mine, but then I'd have to get a second barrel to do that.

I use a Remington 870 Express, smooth bore with 3" winchester rifled slugs. Have a Simmons pro dimond scope, and it is very accurate out to 100 yrds.
