If I had to kill something to enjoy being in the woodz i would give it up too. Just being in da woodz should be enough to call it a good day.

My feelings exactly Fun. That's why I don't mind if I don't bring any game back. The time there was what made it worthwhile.

You shouldn't ask our opinion if you did really want it. Its not "crap". You sound like some other ex-member who used to be on here. When folks had a different way of thinking than his, he said their way was "crap". Smok your getting to the age where folks are going to expect you to start acting like a man, this "I'm just a kid" stuff ain't going to cut it anymore. At 18 your old enough to vote(which effect the rest of us) and die for your country. People are not going to let you slide off as "being just a kid" for much longer they are going to start expecting more from ya. Hope you change your mind about hunting but only you can make that decision. Good luck in what ever you decide to do.:)

Smoke - have you been able to try over here around your Dad's ? Jim's woods and also over by the point might be pretty good spots.
Oh - And speaking of the point - thanks for the time you put in over there helping to keep things nice.
Have you had much time to spend over this way lately? I know earlier in the summer your Dad said work had you pretty tied up.

Smokey, If spider webs are a problem its cause you are walking way to fast to stalk a squirrel, If you slow dound and look you will see em first and then just brush em a side or better jet go around em, Spiders NEED to HUNT to eat!!

you could come out by me. just plan to wear your deer hunting clothes and they sit there on the tree right next you and bark at you for half the day

if you plan to hunt squirrel, try to avoid getting run over by deer :(

Wow! This thread took off in a bad direction.

Smokey, listen to Old Man Mike. I cut my teeth in the outdoors shooting squirrels. Grey Squirrels. Now squirrels in general are quite wary and my Dad and PawPaw was hard on me to slow down, "heck boy, just find a nut tree and sit there a good long time." they'd tell me. Wasn't long, I started to figure out, you gotta move through there like a box turtle only quieter.

I kilt a few fox squirrels and the old man would show up with 5 greys. I'd say, Dad, them grey ones run off when they see me, but these red ones just sit there and try to hide." He'd chuckle and tell me i was makin' too much noise. Bein' a kid, I was sure he was wrong was just gettin' lucky. But, I learned he was right later on.

So, them squirrels is everywhere, but you're not gonna stomp through the woods walking like you do through a city neighborhood and wack a stack of wild squirrels.

If you find a spot and keep going, just hang in there.

Smoke you need a wiggle stick.... you grab you a twig and walk through the woods swinging your twig and looking like a dumazz like the rest of us...

Smokey

Dont let the old fart's get you down.

I doubt they were all about "just being in the woods" at your age either.

Everyone grows/matures at there own speed, your off to a good start your asking for help here rather then from some knucklehead off the street.

Find a couple oak tree's sit down near them and wait for the little tree rats to come out for breakfast. ;)

I don't feel the tread has taken a wrong turn. Flat speak for yourself, I have never shot an animal that I didn't intend to eat unless it was a nuisance animal. Thats the way I was raised from the word go. Taking an animals life is something that should ALWAYS be looked upon as a serious undertaking. I think thats one rule that should be a priority over other things folks seem to be so hung up on like if you shot it in the head or in the gut or a lot of other little things folks get so worked up over. When someone comes right out and says "I'm looking to fire off a few rounds at something" or on the order of that, I feel that I wouldn't want to take them hunting or give them any tips to point them in the "right direction" to achieve that stated goal. I eat these things and even feed them to my family and would hate to think of someone wasting them. Maybe I took it the wrong way but that what I think of when I hear someone talk like that. I have asked many many folks and have taken several folks hunting with me on my land and have shown them public places to go, as others have done the same for me so my words in this post are not just words on the internet. They are backed up with actions. I'm all for helping other and giving them a chance but certain basic understandings need to be agreed upon first. To me the most basic is "we don't got to the woods to shoot at living things unless we intend to kill them with the least amount of suffering we can and that we use what we take". If I truly didn't believe in this I would have gave up bow hunting after the first season I hunted.

AHA! We (yu and i Fun) read the OP differently. I took it as an honest question from an outdoorsperson who wanted a place close to home, had not hunted squirrel much before, and had cabin fever. I took no issue with the fact that he wished to actually harvest game while out there as opposed to have a need to just be out there.

I do not know Smokey, maybe you do and that is why you read it the way you did. I get a feeling from some of the other posts he may be younger than me. I used to be that age, I remember what it was like to want to go and want to bring home some meat. Go back to you hunter safety book and look at the stages of a hunter. It fits right in.

If i was new to the forum and came in and read this thread not knowing some of you al from previous posts, i would take a few of the posts the wrong way and think maybe some of yall were Donkeys... :D

Anyway, Smokey, don't get discouraged. I been in your shoes being shy on ground to hunt.

I don't know...maybe i read it wrong...

Well Oz what is the OP? The original post? If you go back and look I tried to be supportive it was not till several post in when I was told by Smokey he didn't want to hear that "crap" i.e. what I was saying in my reply that I became less supportive of his "efforts" to enjoy the outdoors. As far as someone being new on here thinking some of us are donkeys. I don't know what to say about that accept you have to have been on here for the last couple of years and have been following the way things have progressed. Oh well I guess thats the internet for ya.:)

Flat speak for yourself, I have never shot an animal that I didn't intend to eat unless it was a nuisance animal.

I didn't say anything about you killing anything, thats what you got out of it.
My point was not everyone grows at the same speed, grows to understand the spiritual side of the outdoors.
Yes spiritual, it's a religion to me and if I had to kill something every time out I would have quit a long time ago.
That doesn't mean I'm going to bad mouth a teenager because he doesn't (in my mind) get it, yet.

You don't have a problem bad mouthing others. Who said anything about "bad mouthing" anyone? I told him the same thing I would have told anyone of my kids. If I would have agree with him, judging by your past replies to other threads, YOU would have been the first to say we where both wrong. Mr. "The woods is my church". G. tried to stick up for him saying how wonderful he was cleaning up the "point" look where that got her. LOL He told her good didn't he? It not just "teenagers". I have had 40 year old men shoot squirrel nest right in front of me like there was nothing wrong with it. They will never hunt with me again. I told him that cause in many other post over the last several years he always follows up his actions with "hey I'm just a kid" or the old trusty "J/K". That gets old after the first 10 or 15 times. Ok your turn..:)

BTW Flat his profile says hes 19. There where many, many young Marines who served their country with distinguished honor who where 19 and even younger. I doubt they would be happy with being called a "kid". Thats one of the big problems America faces today. We don't expect much from our young folks so why should they expect much from themselves?

G. tried to stick up for him saying how wonderful he was cleaning up the "point" look where that got her. LOL He told her good didn't he?

I don't feel like "he told me good".. He gave credit to his Dad for taking care of that area this year .. and I had said in my post that his Dad had said his work was keeping him busy this summer (in comparison to other years) .. I took no offense to Smokey's answer to me and I do think he's a good fella. Until he gives me a reason not to, I'll keep on sticking up for him.
So, not sure what point you were trying to make with that part of your post.. I don't feel like Smoke was rude or of line in any way towards me.. just wanted to make sure that was clear.
If your perception of his answer was different ..so be it.. but I have no quarrel with his response to me.

Sorry for the hijack - can we get back to the original reason for Smokey's thread? Areas that he might be able to check out for squirrel hunting?

I don't like spider webs either, but that's part of being in the woods especially during the warm months.

The only good thing I can say about spider webs is.....
If spider webs are not present on a trail or travel route it tells you that most likely someone..or possibly a deer has been down that trail or travel route .

If webs are present you may be in an undisturbed part of the woods..

Which is a good thing..especially when hunting! :D
