View Full Version : My Latest Project...
we bought this old camper to fix up for a little huntin' cabin, it's a '73 Mallard. we didn't want to spend too much, drove around last weekend to the camper capitol, Benton, most had been sold, we found one for $1500 that wasn't in too good of shape, still wasn't sure I wanted to pay that much so I decided to wait, on the way home 2 blocks from my house we saw an old camper sitting in a driveway, not for sale, so I pulled in and started to talking to the owner he said, "you want that camper? you can have it for $300" I looked at it "SOLD!" it's basically a piece of crap, but hey, for $300 what can you expect. it will be a fun project fixing it up, I might camo it too. All I can think of is coming out of the woods and being able to sit down to some hot coffee and a hot breakfast. we have a spot picked out for it just need to cut some small brush to get it in there.

Nice Project.....we had a camper and sold it last year because we didnt use it that much and now we went tent camping again and it SUCKS! So anyway we are in search of a little camper like this.....let me know if you all see any more...
$300 is a steal. I got mine for $500, and I had to rebuild everything but the kitchen area. Looks like a good one. Keep us updated on the project. Putty tape is your friend...
500? that's a good deal too....I been looking in the sitrader, the local papers, ebay and larry's ....but I would like to come across one from an individual if possible....they seem to be the best deals....
Here's mine... it's a tent on wheels, but I don't need to load any gear to leave. Just hook up and go.

This is when I got it...

oh yea...I remember now...we had a shasta too...but it was 27-29 foot I believe or somewhere around there....it slept nine! Anyway, it was a nice older camper as well.....
I just don't believe in financing something that you only use a couple times a year...or that's how it works out for us...
How many does that sleep????
The camper is nice...looks like alot of work was put into it...complete with wings and all!!!
flatlander 06-30-2007, 15:53 Gotta have it camo'ed, HZ.
Bob did you have to pay extra for the hoodlums ? :D
Bob did you have to pay extra for the hoodlums ? :D
I pay every day...;)
Those wings alone sell for $100 a set. It can sleep 4. 2 Down, and 2 little ones up in the bunk
flatlander 06-30-2007, 18:35 I pay every day...
I hear that.
gretchensteele 07-01-2007, 10:55 Great Deal and the good part about redoing it..you can have it set up exactly like you want it! We still tent camp...but are looking for one of those teeny ones to pull behind the motorcycle....those really are tents on wheels! LOL
Gretchen, there was a guy that sold them either in Paducah or Sikeston I can't remember......They where brand new though......Are you looking for used????
uncle matt 07-14-2007, 10:05 We are looking to get a "camper" to put down on the farm for bunking.
But we don't want a typical camper. We're looking for one of those mobile construction offices. Basically a bow, sometimes they have a washroom in them or a little wet bar, which is what we're really after. Then we can really set it up the way we want.....
A few bunk beds with large totes under them should be fine for 6 guys.
A 3 level (2 compartment each level) shelf for each guys gear bags.
A kitchen table and chairs......
A gun locker.
Microwave on the wet bar.
Maybe convert the washroom into a shower by basically builing a big shower floor (handicap size), cover the walls and just popping a small toilet on the floor and a small sink. Shower curtain across the door. Viola!
Really nice is that there is actually some headroom in these.
Kewl.....I pmd you again.....
That looks like it gonna be quite the project... Keep us posted as you go along....
gretchensteele 07-19-2007, 07:12 uncle matt - sometimes those are fairly easy to come by when a construction project is over....Link Truck Service in Sparta used to have some extras floating around...I'll try to remember to ask about them the next time I see somebody from there....anotherthought is buy an old Van trailer, take the running gears off and then just put in the interior you want, or leave the running gears on so you can still move it. Or better yet an insulated reefer..
Bam Bam - we will probably buy a used one....I never buy anything new! LOL
here's the new paint job, didn't turn out like I wanted, but latex is hard to paint trees with, we're still going to add some leaves, mostly brown.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g125/huntrz_2006/camper3.jpg
omg....that looks different already........did you wife draw that?
Don't forget to paint the tounge and the step....lol....
p.s. we painted our camper and I hate latex too.....
flatlander 07-26-2007, 22:41
I like it.....A LOT !
How long did it take to paint just the one side ?
I know to long.
What county is it in ? LOL sorry
EDIT
You should buy some of those camo rims they make.
I guess you could camo them yourself.
it's in Randolph right now, but will be shipped to an undisclosed location, I'd tell ya, but i'd have to... well you know the rest
we painted the gray background on saturday, took maybe 2 hours, the trees took about three hours. I was trying to do something that would be hard to see in the winter when most of the leaves are gone. wife, dog and I sat in it Saturday night drinkin' "painkillers" and playing the guitar, almost camped out in it.
What is a "painkiller you ask?" fill a jug with ice, pour 3 ounces of light rum, 3 ounces of dark rum, 1 1/2 oz. of orange juice, 1 1/2 oz. of pineapple juice, 1 oz. of pina colada mix, and a good squirt of lime juice, cover shake for a few minutes then strain into plastic martini glasses with a slice of pineapple...it definitely killz the painz!
that's funny......I can't believe you gave out the county??? Are you serious? lol
That didn't take as long as what I would have thought though......I get to be a perfectionist and take forever on stuff.......
My fam used to sit out by the camper and play guitars and sing...just not in the front yard though.usually up at south marcum or wanye fitsgerald at rend lake......I tried to learn since I used to get bored in the campgrounds all summer but didn't get too far.......I did get pretty good for a while on the harmonica until my mom said I couldn't play it in the camper anymore! lol....
yea, maybe I should post the part about camping in the front yard in the "most red neck thang ya ever dun", course that duznt even come close ta beein the most redneck thang i ever dun...
No, the icebath trailer was pretty good.....lol..
this is the little sign that was in the window when we first saw this camper, we thought it was a for sale sign from a distance, we decided it's going to stay...
the previous owner gave us way more info on his escapades than we wanted to hear after i made a comment on the sign.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g125/huntrz_2006/cmprrckn.jpg
OMG....
when we bought are pop up from an old man...I swear we had the same sign...lol......well not the same sign but the same writing....I was like uh, what' this...oh you can keep this....lol.......He said oh no that goes with the camper....lol
gretchensteele 07-27-2007, 07:28 That's a really cool paint job!!! Now I'm going to be keeping my eyes peeled for it while I wander around the county....we're in Randolph too..but just barely...when the corn is down, you can see the Perry county line from our back porch! Where I used to live on the other side of town, our ground had the city limits on one side, we were in Randolph county and bordered by washington and Perry..we were literally in the corner of the county!
That's how we are...We are in Williamson but I can swim to Johnson and that don't say much...lol..I always listen for the weather in Johnson as well because they {seem} to have worst storms...or maybe because it blows from the lake I don't know...
There .......I gave away my county.. I hope you all are happy!
lifestudent55 07-27-2007, 09:01 yea, maybe I should post the part about camping in the front yard in the "most red neck thang ya ever dun",
Hasn't everyone done that at one time or another?
Too bad the camper's gonna be stationary. I'd like to see it going down the highway. That's too cool. Could you imagine people at rest stops asking you where you got the camper coz they want to get one like it? Maybe end up with a side business doing custom camper paint jobs. 'course you could always paint the truck to match....
flatlander 07-27-2007, 09:09 asking you where you got the camper
You mean what county ?
I know getting old but I find humor in it. :D

it seems like everybody has got that sign in there or on camper must be a southern illinois thing
scott huschle 07-27-2007, 12:11 Great job on the camper, now alls you need is some camo curtains and your ready to hunt out of it, instead of camping in it for deer season.
How is the project coming along?
finally got the camper down to its final resting place, still have a little work gettin' it leveled up and clearing campsite area, but I have a feeling there's gonna be some good grub and some serious beer drinkin' goin' on here...
we were gettin' some looks going down the road.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g125/huntrz_2006/camper7lo.jpg
That's awesome H. And your wife did all the drawing work herself...NICE JOB! I could imagine the stares though....lol......Some people just don't get it! lol...
gretchensteele 09-16-2007, 21:43 why do I have the feeling I've been down that road.....hmmm nah can't be...I'm just imagining that it looks familiar while we are all in "what county is that" mode..
That's where we are going G..lol......gotta be better than the city lake right? lol......j/k
You gotta come up with a name for it too huntrz........lmao! We always named everything we had boats and all...lol....
why do I have the feeling I've been down that road.....hmmm nah can't be...I'm just imagining that it looks familiar while we are all in "what county is that" mode..
you have been down that road before, road to the the cemetery, sssshhhh!
How about the county camper.....there you go......your county my county silo county.....lmao! Time for bed!
actually we did name it, "The Farm House",

oh should have known...we always do that too.....Some people look at us like ????????
Go get some marshmellows out of the farm house......Yea, sounds good! lol
gretchensteele 09-16-2007, 22:48 you have been down that road before, road to the the cemetery, sssshhhh!
Hah my brilliant memory and powers of recall! LOL ...I was pretty sure that was the same road...but didn't want to give away the top secret location.....
Huntrz you got some competition ............not really. but had to snap a pic....lol

gretchensteele 11-07-2007, 08:22 Huntrz is much lovelier, more artistic, and so much better all the way around..but hey we couldn't pass up a shot of this..I said hey Bam..look...Huntrz is better though...LOL
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!
another CAMO-CAMPER!
Is that what you call that? lol........I told gretch the kids might have done that one.......didn't do as good as Mrs. Huntrz........:D :D
gretchensteele 11-07-2007, 09:04 definitely not as good as Mrs. Huntrz....
But we thought you'd get a kick out seeing it! Her's still gets first place in my book!
flatlander 11-07-2007, 09:19 Should have left a SILO business card on the door, right above the deer track.
Should have left a SILO business card on the door, right above the deer track.
Oh my I didn't even notice the deer track......there was a guy out there though yest that really that the right set up....."It was DEER CAMP HEAVEN! lol....I could smell the bacon and eggs as we drove by.......lol.......He looked happy to just see someone too.....:D :D
gretchensteele 11-07-2007, 09:31 If I had some Silo Cards..I'd have given out a good many by now..hmm..maybe I'll have to make some to keep on me instead of scrawling the website address on candy bar wrappers LOL
Bob had a whole bunch gretch.......He sent some to me too.....I ran out a while ago though.....lol.....I usually just say....Ill send you the link now...lol.
HUNT nice looking just an idea, we used the camo setup cloth stuff, (at rual king for quick blind or stand wrap) any way put it on the windows with 2 way tape (outdoor type) and you can see through just like screen but from a few feet away outside you cant see anything but the camo... I get to the property this week i'll get a pic.
We also have an old wildeness that I have been working on for regular camping, everything in it so far but heat, been thinking about puting it up 4 sale, better get a pic I guess if some are looking for one?
Birdhunter1 11-07-2007, 18:17 My dad and I were gonna build a shack to set on his trailer and take on fishing trips, it was gonnae be 16' long, have a covered porch and a bunk area. I'm glad we never built it as we would have looked like the Clampett's.
gretchensteele 11-07-2007, 18:25 No bird..the clampetts are what we look like when we leave for trips on the bike with everything stacked and tied all over it..including lawn chairs LOL
lifestudent55 11-07-2007, 18:27 I'm glad we never built it as we would have looked like the Clampett's.
You say that like it's a bad thang.

What???????? Lawn Chairs......you should see us when we go camping....I think I gotta pic........My uncle seen us and told my dad we were moving by the looks of the truck...........ROFl.....
flatlander 11-07-2007, 18:56 I know a spot in Hamilton county that has a pick up truck camper/top mounted on a utility trailer and is being used as a hunting shack.
Guess they spent all the $$ on the acreage they bought.
I cant laugh they have land that i couldn't afford. :(
FunGusAmonGus 11-10-2007, 11:30 Huntrz you got some competition ............not really. but had to snap a pic....lol

Yup, fungus.....how'd ya guess........lol.....Boy, were we worn out that day.... lol
lifestudent55 11-10-2007, 15:47 I think I need to paint my shed camo so the county tax assessor can't see it. :D Y'think it'd work?
It don't work life...........tried it.......lol.....
lifestudent55 11-10-2007, 16:14 Bummer. Oh well, it was worth a try.
flatlander 11-10-2007, 16:23 Life
I dont think they tax on sheds do they, at least not in my county. :D
yet any way. :o
lifestudent55 11-10-2007, 16:51 I don't know what county you're in. I think in St. Clair County they'd tax on the afluent in your septic tank if they thought they could get by with it.
FunGusAmonGus 11-10-2007, 17:26 Life round here if the sheds not attached to the ground they don't tax it. I know a guy who has like 5-6 of those cook buildings cause he dosen't want one big barn cause of the taxes.
