Got an email from the fisheries biologist in Frankland, Williamson, Johnson, and Massac counties in southern Illinois asking if we would be interested in holding a few shoots in the area to reduce overpopulated gar populations in Mermet Lake, located approximately 10 miles northwest of Metropolis just off Route 45. Talked with him for a while on the phone, and we will be having several shoots there!
He tells me the lake level is being dropped to 2-4 ft. for weed control and is very clear. There is an over abundance of spotted gar there that they feel is harming the rest of the lakes fish population. Some of the gar are pretty big Ive been told.
The DNR is rushing thru the permit for a upcoming shoot as we speak, and will also provide fish disposal.
Ill have much more info on this tomorrow when I talk with him again. Pretty cool the DNR calling the BAI to ask for bowfishing assistance, and to offer this great opportunity to us.
So there are going to be a couple more BAI shoots coming up in S. Illinois!
