Here's an article about how good gar is, how to dress 'em, and how to cook 'em. Guess I'll have to give it a try next time we catch one to see if this guy's telling the truth.

Gar IS very good. One of my favorites if it's cooked right.

You can easily over cook it.

My guess is the people saying it's bony and not worth eating have never tried it, right? I've never tried it either, but I'd rather take the word of someone who's tried it than the millions who haven't.

Boneless white meat. Yum Yum. One of my bowfishing buddies will not eat a carp or buffalo but gar, that is a different matter. He eats everyone he can get. When he fries gar and catfish up together for his friend the gar is the first to go,

I have heard that gar is tasty. I just wonder how the heck you clean/fillet one?! Their scales are like armor. I'm sure its on the web somewhere.

I've read that you need tin snips and an ice cream scoop... another method is to hack em into 2 inch chunks w/ a hatchet, then run a knife around under the armor...

instead of an electeric fillet knige...try a 16 inch chainsaw :)

Joe check this link out that was posted earlier.

Or just go to www.illinoisbowfishers.com and look at the links on the left hand side. The gar cleaning article is the third one down. There are several informative "how-to" articles there.

Looks easy enough. I caught one gar this weekend, but it wasn't big enough to have very large fillets. It's still in the Kaskaskia waiting to get large enough to be worth eating. In the mean time, it's going to have a sore tongue for a while. I couldn't get it to open its chops to take my hook out so I cut the line. He ought to fit in well with the young adult scene now since he's got his own tongue jewelry, right?

Carpsniper-

Thanks for the link. Doesn't look too bad. Gonna have to try it.

hmmm very interesting...I happen to like buffalo and carp, and lots of other "junk fish" but haven't tried gar because I too was mystified about the cleaning process...Thanks so much for the links!!

Yeah. I know what you mean and they're not something you can easily ccut into making it all that much harder to try different methods.
