View Full Version : Mushroom Kits....... FunGusAmonGus 06-22-2007, 08:35 anyone out there ever try this?? I wonder if it works? http://www.gmushrooms.com/MHK.HTM carpsniper 06-22-2007, 11:07 Yeah, my brother bought three of these and gave me and Dad one each. That's three attempts and zero 'shrooms. IMO, Save your time and money and spend them in the woods next spring. Bob 06-22-2007, 11:51 There are kits for other shrooms that I know get better results. You get the right host log, drill it, and "plant" the mycelium rich plugs in it. Put it in a good spot, and supposedly it can produce 5 years or more. FunGusAmonGus 06-22-2007, 11:52 thats for shiitake though right I mean not morel ??? lifestudent55 06-22-2007, 16:54 Everything I've read says morels are the hardest to grow. carpsniper 06-23-2007, 10:01 Like I said, I don't remember the particulars other than we followed the directions and never saw a mushroom (or a toadstool for that matter) anywhere near where we sowed the kits. I think we had to dig up a small area then sow the contents of the package on the ground, then work in some wet leaves then cover it with leaves to keep it moist. You had to water it and put kitchen scraps like egg shells on it. Blah, blah, scam, scam, IMO. :( FunGusAmonGus 06-23-2007, 10:58 I read one that said you have to burn a pile of wood which sterilizes the soil to stop anything else from growing there which might compete with the mushrooms. After the soil cools you can sow the subsraight which contains the spores. All this must be done at the right time of the year. All the ones I have seen have guarantees, but the sellers have so many conditions they want you to follow that if the shrooms don't grow it is almost certainly the buys fault. I kinda though it was too good to be true. I have also read where you can buy dried morels on line. Where they get almost all of these from is groups of illegals that follow the mushroom bloom out west on public lands.Mainly in area that have just been burned. The company's selling dried ones online buy them from these migrant pickers. If this kit was such a great thing they would just grow them on farms or in facilities where the climate could be controlled.I have also noticed most of the dried ones are the blacks. You almost never see whites or yellows for sale dried online. FunGusAmonGus 06-23-2007, 11:07 http://www.thefarm.org/mushroom/morel.html looks like a lot of trouble.... It sure would be nice to have your own little morel patch right in your yard. huntrz 06-24-2007, 07:22 there was a story about a guy in Brewer Missouri, just north of Perryville, that grows morels in his lawn. he said that for years he has been taking morels and mixing with buttermilk in a blender, then spreading over his lawn. I have tried taking the scraps from bottom of shroom bag and old morels I find and mixing with buttermilk and spreading around an area near my house that's all hardwoods and elms, I have yet to find a morel here. I still think this could work under right conditions. I once found an elm tree that had fallen over near a creek and some critter had been chewing on the under side of tree making a pile of elm chips, I found morels on this spot for several years, and always had me wondering if you could imitate that. elm and ash chips mixed in a good loose woodland type soil then spread the morel/buttermilk combo over it... years ago I bought one of the white button mushroom kits, everything did as it was supposed to do, the white mycilium spread throughout the soil in the box, little white globs formed but they never fruited into mushrooms, I finally gave up and tossed the soil out on a hillside, I watched it for awhile hoping a shroom would pop, but NOTTA! FunGusAmonGus 06-25-2007, 11:32 I think the spores grow from the decaying roots of the dead elms. Sometimes you will find them under half dead elm probably cause the roots in the area where they are growing are dead.Elms that are dead for a while usually only produce for about 3 years after they die all the way.At least thats what I have found. The link about the elm farm kinda supports this theory. FunGusAmonGus 06-25-2007, 11:34 sorry the link about the morel farm not the elm farm |
