Man what do you do? Weather says temps will drop to frigid after Wednesday. Lows in the teens. Bet a big push of ducks comes through Wed. and Thurs. Heck up til the 6th is gonna be COLD. I got muzzleloader tags, but I bet the ducks will be movin... Which do I do????????? Duck in tha AM, deer in the PM sounds like a good deal.
I bet at daybreak thursday there'll be a baragge of shots with the deer hunters and with the ducks moving in.
I was down at Pyramid State Park last Wednesday and on Saturday quail hunting. Lots of duck hunters out on Saturday but not a lot of shooting. Tons of light geese and quite a few ducks on the main refuge lake there. Saw a couple hundred specks too. They have some nice blinds there but you really have to haul the gear a long way from the truck. The hour and a half drive is just a little too far for me to try to get there by 4:30 for the draw. There were a lot of birds at Carlyle, but I am not up to hunting in that zoo anymore on opening weekend.
hunted pyramid first 4 days of season. ducks numbers were good 2 weeks before season. most gone by opening day. killed a few geese. tons of snows and specks. few cacklers also. will be duck hunting on the river thursday morning.should be good. if i don't get popped by a pumpkin head i will report back on the hunt.
Thanks for the report DaveV and welcome to the site. I'm about out the door with the ML today, but think I'll hit the ducks the next couple of days myself. I'll need to remember an orange hat for when I'm walking to my spot.
Where are you guys planning on duck hunting at? Sure wish they would let us duck hunt at Peabody. I am going to do some field hunting on Saturday morning north of Edwardsville. The ducks and geese should be moving. Should be fewer people out due to the deer season.

Day started bad, power outage = no alarm, I set my cell phone alarm "just in case" and don't you know I put in 4:15 PM Arrgh! Went out anyway at Becks. One other boat was there. I heard him shoot a few time, but I think he limited and left. I saw ducks all day. Had a group of 3 come in, but I fanned on em, then about 10 a BIG flock started to work for me. Had 50 come in, and it sounded like a jet circling over my head. Picked a green head (miss), stayed on him, SPLASH, dog's on the way, miss with the third. 6 shells, one duck, and a beautiful day if you dressed for it.
OH YEAH!!! I forgot to sign in, I was so worried that the hill would be slick going down in there. Got checked on my way out, and got a warning. WCO offered me a lab pup though. He's a nice one. (WCO; haven't seen the dog yet.) He's checked me before.
LESSON IS!!! Don't forget to sign in AND out on the state lands.
He was then headed out with a stuffed deer to work on road hunters.

I would love to ride along on one of these stings.
thursday hunt was acold wet mess. 2 ducks and didn't see many. those we did see were high and moving south. my buddy and 1 other guy hunted friday morning and killed 8 greenheads. just my luck. now i get to spend the weekend picking up tree limbs. good luck to all.
Another good morning today. Ducks were working for us well. We had to bust ice today. My dog Nesene made 5 great retrieves the last 2 days. (PROUD!) Unfortunately there were sky busters that would shoot at and flare birds working our spread. Ahh public swamps... what do ya do??? Memeber Josh, a buddy of his and I got 3 woodys and 1 greenhead. I left them out there at 0915, so they might have gotten more. Pics will come... If you're into ducks the time is now....
