Man I need more paid time off. LOL gretchensteele 06-17-2007, 15:24 That place has some outstanding photo opportunities too...it's a little far so I don't get there nearly as often as would like. I'm trying to talk hubby into taking a day or two and canoening there when wheat harvest is over... FunGusAmonGus 06-17-2007, 20:35 back in the day they where roadtrippin and they came to this river and decided to have a little smoke break. When they brokeout the peace pipe (calumet) they found out that it was cached hence the name Cache river..........The real story behind the name is related to Fort Massac The French set up a fort west of Fort Massac between what is now Joppa and Grand Chain. This Fort was made to tan buffalo hides and to render the oils out of the buffalo. The way people traveled back then they had to use the river so they would go down to Cairo and then up the Mississippi. The first Europeans to cut across Illinois to the buffalo Fort came from St Louis over land did so in a very bad winter storm. It had snowed so much that the river was completely hidden. Cache is French for "hidden" or "to hide" hence the name ....heres a link mentioning the "old French Tannery". http://www.southernmostillinoishistory.net/juchereau.htm gretchensteele 06-18-2007, 18:53 Thanks for sharing that..you are a fountain of interesting info!!!
