When I was little my Dad used to drive for Link Trucking when they still had their shop in Walsh. They did a lot of runs for the local coal mines and I used to get to ride along a lot. They had one BIG shop out south of Pinknyville called "central Shop" because it was kinda located right in the middle of "coal country". Around this shop they had all types of equipment and pieces of equipment related to coal mining. Some of the stuff was HUGE!! I used to call the place "Land of The Giants". Well today me and Nic was out fishing at Pyramid and we found a old dog chain and it reminded me of some of the things I would see as a kid in the lot at Central Shop. It was cool showing the boy some of the old relics from the "glory days" of Southern Illinois coal mining.

Did you take your findings home?

Its hard to imagine something was large enough to bust that link.

Now ponder this - how did they make those links? I am pretty sure I know.

I think they forge welded them. Put them together with a break in them some where and heated them white hot and hammered them till the cut merged back together.

I guess they could have been cast. There is such a thing as cast steel and on that one it looks like a casting number..
