View Full Version : Chasing Kinkaid Musky!
gretchensteele 03-12-2009, 11:11 Thanks much to Scott H for inviting me along to shoot his trip chasing the great musky that live in the waters of Kinkaid Lake.
Although we weren't fortunate enough to land any of the monsters we did have some hits, follows and watched a couple of the big boys roll the bait a few times.
Our guide, Walter Krause, was delight to spend the day with, and was a great teacher. He was patient with my questions, and gave us some great lessons about muskies in general not just fishing for the giant toothy devils.
He's going to be guest on Scott's show soon so be sure to listen in - you won't be disappointed!
I'll give Scott a chance to share the days adventures with you first :) , then I'll give you my take as an absolute novice musky fisherperson.
Here's just a few shots to tease you with..
I just got them off the card no edits.. and lighting was tough.. I shot right at 300 frames, so stay tuned as I add more shots :p
It was pretty chilly out there yesterday, and by the end of the day..even I was getting cold!

Cool pic's G! Great that you got to go.
lifestudent55 03-12-2009, 12:07 That's a lot of wind when a lure lays out while it's hanging.
Looks Fun! did the guys from Wisconsin have any luck?
scott huschle 03-12-2009, 14:12 G thanks for tagging along and taking some great pictures. The topper would have been a couple pictures with some Muskie, bit it still was a great time. Mother Nature is never predictable and the cold front and wind definetly played a big factor in us catching some fish.
The night before when it was 70 degrees Walter went out and caught 3 or 4 Muskies between 3pm and 7pm with water temps in the 60's. The next day when we went out it was 32 degrees and water temp hoovering around 50. We fished hard from 10am to 7pm with lots of wind and only some sun off and on, threw alot of different lures trying to see what they liked and only a few seemed to work. Yes Bob he does like orange lures, but he has boxes upon boxes of several other colors and styles of baits that he uses depending on the water clarity, pre-during-post spawn and time of the year he may be fishing. Yes G Walter had 2 lures that we're made in Poland and on is in the pictures and the other looked some what similar( both had the perch look).
Walter had on Muskie hit his lure and the fish missed it, then he did a figure 8 at the boat and the fished rolled the lure at the boat and missed it again. He later came back to the same spot with a different lure and the same fish missed the lure again and boiled the water which was cool to see. I had a nice one hit, I set the hook and felt him start to run and I placed alittle more tension on the line and rod and started to real him in and the lure came free and he was on his way without my hook in him.
I did catch a nice little 2 pound bass that hit the lure hard and put up a good fight. Our fish we're all in 54 degree water and when we moved to water that was 48-49 degree we would never get a hit. We learned that a follow of the lure or a miss of the lure is just as important as catching the fish. We talked to another guide out on the lake and they had a few hits and follows and we're real excited about that as well.
It was amazing the people that come to this lake to just fish for these Muskie. Like G said we met 2 guys from Green Bay Wisconsin that we're down for the week and Walter said he is always seeing people from all around the country fishing for the Illinois Muskies.
Walter is a encyclopedia of knowledge when it comes to cathing these Muskie. He's been fishing for these fish since he's been 16 back in Pennsylvania where he grew up. He was a great teacher of his sport and represents the Illinois Muskie Alliance very well.
This is all I will say about the trip for now so I can save the rest of the story for the outdoor show next week. If you want a guide for Muskie,Walley, bass that can put you on fish and has all the equipment to do it with, Walter Krause is the man to call when fishing Kinkade, Cedar Lake or Shelbyville.
Thanks again G for taking the pictures and I'll be calling you again for some more great pictures on my next outdoor hunting or fishing trip.
Hope you all can listen to next week show with Walter because there is alot about the Muskie I thought I new and that didn't even come close to what I knew. It will be a great show.
Looks like you all had a good time.....Bummer you didn't snag a big un...
col pictures and looks like u had a great time too
Sounds like a great time. Nice photo's G!

Larkin.... Walter Krause wrote a book on the subject, and gave me one for a prize! It is called "Muskie Fishing; I did not know that" You may be able to find it locally or on Muskies Inc. someplace.
Chris Schoentag 03-20-2009, 14:26 Does anyone eat muskie?
